Does anyone knows if Sony is coming out with a HDTV Directv PVR. I really like my Ultimate TV capabilities and can't give up the pause and replays.

I thought SAT-HD300 was a PVR but I learned it's not. Interestingly, Sony in its news release about this unit says you can record on a PVR:

"... with the new simultaneous high-definition and standard-definition video output function, the receiver provides effortless program recording onto a VCR or DVR. The new Timer & Record function allows simple scheduling of up to 20 events from the program guide and can repeat events to ensure daily or weekly favorite shows won't be missed."

It doesn't say what kind of connection you need to accomplish this.

Can anyone shed some light on this. I really want a HDTV and have selected one of the new 2004 Mitsubishis but can't decide on what kind of receiver. Thanks.

HDTV Directv PVR? Can't help you there, but...

Consider the Samsung SIR-TS160 satellite/terrestrial tuner. I'm pleased with mine.

Is that Mitsubish HDTV receiver/monitor a DLP? If not, suggest you consider a DLP. See Bill's DLP Page (op cit).

Seagate will sell newly designed disk drives optimized for PVRs to Toshiba, Thomson, Sony, Pioneer, Pace, Nokia, Motorola and Echostar.

A typical PVR handles three streams of data: one to watch a recorded program, another to record a separate program, and a third data channel to provide additional information.

Seagate's new drives transfer an average of 48 MB/s, enough for eight 2.5-MB/s streams of standard television or four high-definition streams of 5 MB/s each.

I agree that the Samsung SIR-T160 is a great DirecTV HDTV unit with DVI digital output.

I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO START SEEING SOME DETAILS regarding HD PVR units. There have been small tidbits in the news, but no real content about what is coming our soon.

I have heard that by January 1-2 HD PVRs will be released, but not much more info on them.

All of us with HDTV and D*TV would sure welcome these.....

Thanks for the Reply. Sony announced a new PVR with two 250 Gig PVR today. Unfortunately they are only sold in Japan.

I have also read the review on the new Zenith HDTV PVR. Unfortunatly it doesn't have a DVI connection.

You need firewire to record, or an integrated DVR. I don't think DVI does the trick.

How about if I get a regular HDTV set top box like the Sony HD200 or 300 and then connect it to a digital recorder such as a DVR, an external hard drive or even a PC with a large disk space. What type of connection do I need to get the HD quality recording between the two devices? Does the firewire give me HD quality?

1. There is currently no way to record HD on a PC (HDD, etc) and there likely won't ever be a legal way with the copy protection issue. The previous statement is an error. I have no idea why I made it. I was thinking that it will be unlikely that you'll be able to record onto a PC from Cable. You can already record onto a PC from OTA. as mentioned below.

2. If you have a separate DVR device, getting its signal from a STB, both the STB and the DVR device will need firewire.

3. Cable and satellite will have "integrated" devices - for example, see previous threads on the SA8000HD & Dish 921 PVR (search by model number) These are due out later this year.

I think you could use a MYhd card on aPC to record HD.
