View Full Version : I'm assuming this is a problem with FOX

I got my new 3250HD box and have it set to DVI auto so that it will stretch the non HD stuff as to prevent burnin. Well something weird happens with FOX-WS that I will demonstrate with some pictures I made. Now these are not from my TV, I made them myself to simulate the effect.

This is what the regular normal 4:3 pic should look like:

Now this is how I'm assuming the HD channels feed should be coming through:

But this is what shows up on the screen:

Now I'm assuming this is something weird with how FOX sends out the feed cause all of the other HD channels showing 4:3 programming don't do this, oh and when FOX shows a WS program it still does this, stretching it and putting extra bars at the top.

Its not a big deal, but I have to switch the picture mode in settings everytime I want to watch FOX-WS.

Think of Fox as being like a DVD player (non-anamorphic) and everything falls into place (it is 480P after all). You have to get your TV to stretch the image and the only time the image will completely fill your screen is when you use the TV's stretch mode that stretches both vertically and horizonally by 1.33 (sometimes called Zoom or Fill), when there's an EDTV widescreen image coming in. When there's a 4:3 image coming in, you will see black bars on the sides.

One way "around" this is to disable both 480P modes in the STB wizard and the STB will upconvert the 480P to 1080i and the EDTV widescreen will automatically fill the screen and the 4:3 will have black bars (that are usually a bit narrower than the bars on 1080i programming).

I'm not sure if you can do this with a DVI connection since the settings may be "automatic"...

Don't have to worry about this anymore it seems as I am currently getting FOX in 720p with no more problems. America's Sweethearts is coming in with a 720p 16x9 picture with no more weird stretching.

Great, I'm looking forward to that too. Although your affiliate may be broadcasting 720P, the network feed will likely be 480P until September because other affiliates are not ready for 720P.
