I can do item 3 with my SA8000HD (go to the list and select the programme), only problem is, as soon as the recording ends, you get "kicked out" to live TV and you have to FF or REW to where you were. I therefore almost never watch something as it's still being recorded....
I use to be able to do this. Now if I go to recorded shows and start play on something still being recorded, all it does is take me to the time shift buffer of that channel. It does not start from the beginning until the entire program has been recorded.
I'm not sure if this is a change from my SD to HD DVR or something that just changed in one of the recent updates. I just noticed the change in behavior last night when I tried to watch "The Perfect Storm" when there was still 10 minutes of recording time left. Hitting "Play" in the recorded section put me two hours into the movie. It was showing me the time shift buffer. After the movie stopped recording, "Play" worked just fine and started me from the beginning.

To skip commercials my system is to activate FF (fastest mode, which you get by pressing 3 times the FF key) and a fast mental count of 12 at the start of a program.
I've got pretty good hand/eye coordination, so I simply watch for the program material to reappear, and then hit the "7 sec back" button once so I don't miss anything. Even so, it sometimes takes a while to jump through a 4 or 5-minute commercial gap, and if your DVR doesn't "hear" whichever "stop FF" command you use the first time you press it (which happens to me more frequently than I'd like), you can overshoot quite a bit and suddenly have the hassle of rewinding back to the right spot.
On my PC, it's quicker and more precise, because it jumps exactly 30 sec every time I press the "skip" button. I can skip 2-3 times a sec and still see the program images, then use a "10 sec back" button to find the start point after the break. Since the PC only jumps if it "hears" the skip command, a missed command is easier to recover from--just one add'l button press.
The current 8000HD system is not unworkable. I'd simply prefer a different method.

This is the same behavior I see on my 8000HD, as well.

This is a nit, but I think the labels are wrong when I use the "#" button. Can anyone else confirm or deny?
I have the 480p widescreen, 480i widescreen, and 720p displays *disabled* in SARA (via the setup wizard). 480i standard, 480p standard, and 1080i are enabled.
Normally, when I tune from an SD channel to an HD channel, the TV does what it always did with my previous HD STB: it does some funky flashing on the screen for a second, then comes up with the picture in 1080i mode.
However, when I press the "#" button on an HD channel, the legend in the lower right pops up and says, "Zoom 1080i". The screen blinks and flashes, then comes up zoomed...except the TV indicates it's getting a 480p signal. (I don't have a direct indication, but my TV's available options change depending on the video signal it's receiving, so the signal format can be indirectly determined by noting which options are available.)
Press the "#" button again, and the legend says, "Normal 480p". The screen blinks and flashes, then comes up in the same 1080i mode I get when I originally tune an HD channel the first time.
I think it should be saying, "Normal 1080i" and "Zoom 480p". Am I missing something?
Note: If I select "Fixed" for the picture format from the 8000HD settings, then it stays in 1080i mode and correctly says, "Normal 1080i", "Stretch 1080i", and "Zoom 1080i". I would leave it in this mode, and zoom my upconverted SD channels, except that for some reason the 8000HD crops the top and bottom of the SD image when you zoom in. @#$%!

It could be that the # button on your remote is changing zoom features on the TV set and not changing anything on the STB.

No, it's definitely the STB. No question.

I went into the settings and I changed my Output Format to 1080i only Next, I changed my Aspect Ratio to - WideScreen (16:9), Stretch 4:3 picture.
This has been working great for a while and now I have noticed that the Aspect ratio is creating problems. The Aspect Ration setting in the software itself does not change but it seems that it is changing the output anyway. I noticed this because the box is not stretching the picture when the setting itself is telling it to (WideScreen (16:9), Stretch 4:3 picture). To fix the problem I am going back to the settings and I see that in fact the settings have not changed...so then I just pick the setting again and then it fixes the picture as it should be. Then it works fine for a few hours/days and then I will have to go in and do this all over again.......is this happenning to anyone else?
Thanks,
I have heard of issues like this on the SA3250HD when it first came out (they were sending updates and it would "reset" some of these settings and not remember your settings), but I've not encountered that problem with the SA8000HD.
check with your service provider.

travashe,
First I assume you have SARA software in your SA8000HD.
Are you changing both Picture Format and screen aspect in Quick Settings (by pressing the "Settings" button only once)?
From what you say, you have changed the Picture Format to 1080i and you wish to view both HD channels and SD channels with that format, is that correct?
Starting with the HD channels,
1. a true HD program will be in 16:9 aspect while your screen setting is at "Normal".
2. a non HD program with screen setting at "Normal" will be in 4:3 and will have bars on the sides. To make full screen, you have the choice to Stretch or Zoom by pressing the "#" button on the remote or by selecting these modes in Quick Settings right after the Picture Format.
3. The other solution for SD programs on HD channels, and the one I prefer, is to use your TV remote and select Theater Wide 3.
For SD channels,
I recommend to change the Picture Format in Quick Settings to 480i (or 480p if you prefer). If you then use your TV remote, select Theater Wide 1 for 480i and thereafter, each time you change the Picture Format to 480i the screen selection TW1 will be remembered.

I was able to go down to my local Comcast office and pick up the box myself.
Took it home, connected it and went through all the settings. I didn't notice any of the problems that were originally listed on this thread. No audio dropouts, no deletion of recorded programs & picture quality is just as good as my old 3100HD. Also there is an option to only record NEW first run episodes of a weekly show though I haven't tried this yet. I am completely happy with this DVR and it is so worth the 9.95 a month they will charge me. My particular box must have the 160gb drive because I recorded Four 2 hour HD movies & One 1 hour HD tv show and the drive is about half full. Also, the guy down at the local office said he had no idea with the DVI port or the Firewire ports would be active.
My only gripe is switching between the S-Video & Component Video settings.
There is no quick way to do this without hitting the Info & Guide button on the box at the same time. But to be honest I really didn't notice a picture difference in SD between S-Video & Component. Also the 3100 HD did not have the stretch feature and that was the only reason I used the S-Video to avoid bars/burn in.
Good thing I didn't listen to the person over the phone because otherwise I'd be waiting till Saturday to have some schmo come over and do what I did. It just goes to show you that the phone reps at Comcast normally don't know what they are talking about.

First off. I just want to thank everyone for helping me out at this forum since I have gotten my HDTV. Been great.
I am going to pick up this HD DVR after work today for TWC in NYC. I bought the Monster Cable Video 3 Component Cable yesterday and need some help. Can I watch everything thru my component cable, both HD and SD, or should I get another cord. I really would like to watch everything thru this good component cables if that is possible.
Second, I have read different reviews in this forums about where the setting should be. I have a Toshiba 30HF83 HDTV. What settings should I put on the HD DVR for the best possible picture. I mean 1080?, 720?, 480?. I believe my tv can accept all of these so what order should the settings be on the HD DVR. Lastly, I have a digital receiver for audio. What settings should the audio be on the HD DVR for the best possible sound. Thank you all.
1. You can send all the signals through the component video cables. Some people sometimes get a better PQ if they send SD via S-video. I have not found that much difference, but it is certainly possible.
2. After you've done the setup wizard, you should be able to select 1080i for the HD channels (which should be best for your TV) and either 480P or 480i for the SD channels (experiment with the two to see which is better). Don't select 1080i for the SD channels because then your TV probably won't be able to stretch the SD channels.
If they are running SARA software, see the FAQ on SA STBs for tips. If not, some of these tips don't apply and there is a thread on Passport software.
See also the first post in the sticky on the SA8000HD.
Audio should be set to Dolby Digital and you need a Toslink (optical) or coaxial (SPDIF) connnector.

Sorry about the Numerous posts...
Every normal channel is stuck on 4:3 image, except for HDTV channels which show 16:9. How do I adjust the HD-DVR settings to allow my normal channels to appear as 16:9?
Trying to switch the aspect ratios through the TV remote no longer works. I need to know how to do it through the HD-DVR settings. Is there an internal settings or configuration box? Isn't there a "settings wizard"?
How do I get to it?

THis stinks, the 3250 was better quality but hey it does save me from renting two boxes. Does anyone know how to get the ability to change the pass through option like there was on the 3250?
muslnutz: Please read the first post of this thread. Passthrough is not enabled by most service providers yet.
Scherer326: There must have been a setup document that came with the STB. Please read it, or ask your service provider for it. You need to set up the STB to output 480i or 480P for the SD channels, so that the TV can stretch it, and you need to set it up to do 1080i for the HD channels. I assume you've checked out the FAQ on SA STBs and that wizard doesn't work because you have Passport firmware?

You need to go to the “settings”, then “more settings” and you will find the aspect ratio setup.
It asks for your TV type, 4:3 or 16:9. If you answer 16:9, then your choice is letterbox, stretch or zoom for the 4:3 SD channels. You never need to touch the stretch features of the TV. The STB will do the work.
You cannot stretch or zoom an HD channels even if it has a 4:3 program running.
BTW, I leave my box output to 1080i for everything.

About 2 weeks ago the first SA8000HD unit I had (since the Rogers launch) starting rebooting almost constantly - so a Rogers service guy came, confirmed what I had said when I requested the service call and replaced the unit with a new one. However, because there is still no way to archive (record) programs to a VCR or any other recording device yet, I lost all of the programs previously recorded including a number of High Definition ones.
Subsequently, I e-mailed Rogers and got the following reply:
all our boxes operate on sara...this is the guide, etc...due to digital copyright and priracy concersns/laws no cable distributor allows for content to be downloaded from HD PVR to other media storage devices which work independently of SA HD PVR box. There is a new model of hd pvr box coming in early 2005 which will allow extra hard drives to be added, but cannot be accessed or removed just replayed on HD PVR that content was recorded on.
Are we living in a parallel universe or is Rogers? How is that other cable operators including in Montreal can seem to enable archiving, etc. with updated SARA downloads?
Sorry for the rant but I'm a little ticked about loosing the programs.
gooduffer
I believe that the CSR was mistaken.
1. By setting up the SA8000HD for "480i" (SDTV) (S-video) output only, you can send any recorded item to DVD or VCR. (This will negate the use of the unit for HD viewing at the time and you will have to rerun the wizard to view HD again).
2. Our Rogers STBs have firewire out and will be capable of external HDD, once the firmware allows.
3. The copy to VCR will also function with the proper firmware.
The CSR was confused by HD copy protection (see the FAQ on "Recording HD) and simply copying to another analogue device, which is allowed.
Most CSRs cannot be counted on to provide accurate information. If you called back another CSR would give you a different story. That's why these forums are so helpful.

The audio should go through the STB just fine without you doing anything. My receiver detects what the signal is and adjusts. I think most do as well. There is nothing on the STB to set about audio output.

I received my SA8000HD from Charter Communications in MA about 2 weeks ago after owning a ReplayTV PVR for almost 2 years. I must say... the SA8000HD is not much more than a glorified HD-VCR. The dual tuner and HD-recording capabilities are it's only saving graces and since I don't want to pay the monthly service fee for two PVR's and I still want HD, the Replay unfortunately had to go.
What I would like to see (added or fixed):
1. 30-second skip forward button. This is THE feature I want most.
2. A skip-to-time-x:xx feature to jump to a specific point in a
recorded program or a way to 'jump' a certain number of minutes into a
recorded show. It is a real hassle to have to FF or REW to a specific
point in a very long recording.
3. (mentioned before) - Better scheduling; first-run episodes only, by show AND day/timeslot.
4. A web interface to configure and schedule recordings via home network. Or at least, as a service through the cable company's website.
5. The ability to begin playback of a program that is still being
recorded seamlessly. As it stands now, you will be knocked back out to
live TV once the recorded segment ends (the point at which you started
playback) and you have to REW to get back to where you were.
6. The remote control is very weak, signal-wise.
summerfun

1. Not sure what I would use that for. I like the tripple FF feature to pass commercials. I would think you would jump right past the start of a show if you jumped in 30 sec segments. The FF feature even backs up a little after you stop FF so you don't miss the start of the show.
2. I would love that feature.
3. You can schedule first run only, by show, by date, by timeslot.
4. Not sure I would use a web interface. I would like a much better program guide, but that does not come from the DVR, that comes from the cable company.
5. That would be nice.
6. Get new batteries. Mine works just fine.
jamis

1. Having had a 30 second skip button with my replay (not to mention the automatic commerical advance), its tough being without. Most commerial segments are easily divisible by 30 seconds and you can use the 8-second reverse to compensate. The FF is very unweildy, especially when my wife is driving. :)
3. But can you do say... "Record all first run instances of Stargate SG-1 that air 9-10pm on fridays on the SciFi channel"?
4. ReplayTV has third party tools that let you do this (the replay has an HTTP accessable API). I had it set up to work over the internet so I could schedule shows to record while at work or away on vacation. Both Replay and Tivo offer their own offical web interface using their own servers, though there is a 'blackout' period (between 2-24 hours) and you can't schedule things to start recording instantly.
6. I'll try that.
1. The cable companies had to "give up" the 30-second skip function when doing their HD STB negotiations with the MPAA et al. Although the Motorola 6208 does have it via a "reprogramming".
3. This depends on your version/type of the firmware. Some people have it, some do not. Passport has it, I don't believe SARA yet does, but should come shortly.
5. Simple workaround - when you press the "record" button, you'll be taken to a "confirmation" screen. Edit the programme so that it will end several hours later, then you won't get "kicked out" because you'll be finished by the time it ends...

3. But can you do say... "Record all first run instances of Stargate SG-1 that air 9-10pm on Fridays on the SciFi channel"?

Read the first post in this thread. S-video needs to be "activated" by hitting the pip button, then "swapping". This particular STB is not the same as most since not all the outputs are always active.

I think they must have fixed this. It used to work on my SD DVR, then it did not on my HD DVR as you pointed out. But now, as of this weekend, it has started working again.
I started watching recorded programs before they were done recording, then when the recording stopped, a momentary flash of the timeline bar appeared, then disappeared, but it did not bounce me out.
This is the way the old SD DVR worked. HURRAY !!!

People have reported audio dropouts. For some people a reboot solved the problem. See the FAQ on SA STBs for reboot instructions.

The SA boxes leave a lot to be desired. The only sure fire way I've found to solve the audio dropout issue is to switch to analog instead of digital for sound. At first it seems really bad, but your ears adjust, and you won't get any more dropouts. I only do it on rare occasions when it is real bad. Most of the time it is so intermittent I leave my sound on digital. It's hard not to hang with Dolby Digital EX on my 6.1 surround system. When it works right it's incredible :lurk:

Got my notification letter from Rogers advising new pricing for HD programming.
As of Nov 15th TSN and Sports Network (277-278)will no longer be free with HD terminal.
They will charge $9.95 a month for these channels plus the time shifting HD channels.
This is a real rip-off as you already pay extra for the terminal rental or purchase the PVR as I did for $$$$.
Rogers is, as usual, ready to soak it to their customers every chance they get.
I for one will not pay their increase and not suscribe to the $9.95 package

The workaround is described in the first post of this thread - you need to configure the SA8000HD as though it's sending images to an SDTV (enable 480i only in the setup wizard).
You then need to connect the VCR as if it's the SDTV - you can't use the VCR out connections, you have to use the composite or s-video connection and remove the component video connection. If you connect the VCR to a TV, you can "monitor" the recording. You also need to activate the appropriate input on the VCR (channel zero or video input)

OK, I apologize, but I can't read through all of this, so this may have already been mentioned. I currently have a 3250HD and noticed that the HD signal goes out (in SD) from the video outs. I was wondering if this is also true with the 8000HD cause I would like to put one of these on my HDTV and on a regular TV, and it would be nice to be able to at least watch the HD only channels, even if they are no true HD. Also, is the DVI active for comcast yet?
One last, semi-unrelated question. The SD TV that I want to hook up the box to, I believe, has component inputs. So would this accept the signal, and I would jsut set it to 480i only?
Thanks.

Surprised your SA8000HD has a coaxial audio output...mine is optical and works like a charm.
However, you might want to look in your diagnostic pages (press and maintain pressure on the "Select" button on the unit and when the "Mail" light comes on, press the "Info" button):
On page 1 (of 22) what are the readings for:

What I mean to say is RF (RG-6) cable. I want to leave my STB downstairs where the HDTV is, but I want to be able to change to SD output and watch upstairs on my SDTV. I think the easiest way to do this is with the "cable out", right? When I do this, I get video but no audio.
On the SA8000HD not all of the outputs are active at the same time (like they are on a lot of STBs). You'll need to experiment, but you may not be able to do what you want due to the nature of the STB and how the firmware configures it. Try pressing the PiP and Swap buttons and you may get audio... or you may not...

I am aware that I cannot do 2 outputs at the same time. That is why I would need to reset the box to output from the SD/HD each time I change from upstairs SDTV to downstairs HDTV. In fact that is what I do now to get the composite outs to work. However, no matter what I do, I cannot get audio from the "cable out".
Try checking the audio "settings" in the settings menu. Check for variable output, or low volume (increase volume), etc.

I have tried both audio settings in the setup. My volume is on variable and maxed out. I guess I will call Videotron and see what they have to say. Thanks for the help. For the result I am tying to get, is there a better solution than running RF? I don't want to purchase another STB because then I won't be able to watch what I have recorded on the other TV.
What is the story with SA8300HD? Is this available to Vidoeotron? Will they fix bugs with the 8000 now that there is a newer model? Does anyone have any updates about when pass-through will be enabled in Montreal?
I don't know how far you have to the other TV, but you could run a composite or S-video cable and a pair of RCA audio cables all the way.
It may also be possible to put an RF modulator on the output from the STB, using the composite and RCA audio outs.
killedkenny
12-18-2004, 05:08 PM
I think the cable run is to the other TV is at least 100ft. Can i get S-Video or RCA that long?? Besides, I have already done all my fishing of cables. I don't want to open up my walls and ceilings again!
I do have an RF modulator, but I use it for another component. Also, if I am using the modulator for the 8000, then I when I want to watch on the HDTV I have to reach behind and remove the RCA audio that goes in to the modulator, and attach the ones that go into my amp. There is only one set of audio outs, correct? Or can I use the optical and the RCA at the same time?
I also get a terrible hissing in the background with the modulator. I cannot figure out what is causing it. I have already eliminated all other possible causes, it is definitely from the modulator, I just have to test to see if it happens with ANY compnent, or just the 8000.
I am SUPPOSED to be able to receive audio through the RF cable though right?
You should be able to get audio through the RF - don't know why you arent'.
You can use the RCA and optical at the same time I think. Even if you can't you can get a set of Y-connectors or piggyback cables to send two sets of RCA outputs from only one set on the back of the unit.

Of course, if I only had a Pronto !
But...I don't and recently my wife said she was not impressed to see all the remotes on the side table. I had paid attention to lay them in a proper lineup at equal distance:

While visiting the Gallery, I saw that one chap had each of his remotes beside the unit it commands. So I did that.

and clicked the User Guides then Remote Controls. After looking at the back of my DVR remote, saw it was an AT8400-D and clicked to get that User Guide.
Found that in no time at all, I had the DVR remote find the code for my HDTV. Pressing mode "TV" and "Select" together, after a couple of blinks by all mode keys, I entered code 991 and the TV mode key blinked twice and I then pointed the remote at the TV and a few seconds later it shutdown the TV. So I pressed "Select", because it had hit the appropriate code, then pressed "Power" and the TV was ON again.
Went on reading the guide and found that I could power on both the TV and the DVR with one push of the Power button:
- Pressing and holding the "Select" button, I also pressed the "CBL" button until all mode keys blinked twice.
- I entered code 998 and the CBL key blinked twice
- I pressed the "TV" mode key and the CBL key blinked twice
- I pressed the "CBL" key and the CBL key blinked twice
- I pressed the "Select" button and all mode keys blinked three times.
So now I press "Power" and the TV then the DVR come ON and in that order (I wanted the TV to come on first (even if 1/2 a second faster) because one day my DVI will be activated and that is the proper sequence).
Now I wanted to be able to control audio volume (the TV's, not the a/v). So, in General Settings, I changed Audio Control from "Fixed" to "Variable". With the TV remote I set the audio volume high enough and reduced that with the DVR remote.
So now I can use the DVR remote for most of my listening and viewing. If I want to use the a/v, I reduce the Volume with the DVR remote until only one (the last one) vertical line is displayed on the screen (if that last one goes away, the DVR sound is off). Then I can use the a/v remote.

So, I noticed I was having audio problems on some of my SD channels. If I switched from an HD channel to an SD channel, I would have no audio on the SD for at least 30 seconds, and sometimes not at all until I turned STB off and then on again. So I rebooted the machine and guess what.... the audio from the RF out works just fine!
How could I have gone through so many tests and ideas without having tried the most obvious?? duh... I guess I will be cancelling my appointment for the tech.
BTW Michel, I have my remote for my 8000 working exactly that way. My wife got on my case a little quicker than yours I guess.

Killedkenny,
The other day I bought a new VCR and a new DVD to replace a combo DVD/VCR (they should not make these things as a combo...one malfunction impacts the other function). Well, while setting things up, I made a test.
As you know, we in Montreal have the feature "Copy to VCR" for the SA8000HD. So I copied one recording and played it back and it was fine. The point here is that the only connection between the SA8000HD and the VCR was the cable signal (no composite cables). And from the VCR, I had a Video RCA cable to the TV (Video2) and the audio cables to thre a/v, in addition to the cable from the VCR to the TV.

I've been trying without any luck to get both SD and HD out of a Charter SA8000HD. I've just about decided it will not happen.
I have component video to HDTV. The svideo and "copy to vcr" are not active on my cable box, at least not while in HD mode (actually I don't think "copy to vcr" works at all regardless of the mode.) I confirmed with charter that firewire is not active, too bad because I have a digital/analog converter box that can convert firewire to svideo. Charter also said they have NO plans to offer the 8300hd that would solve the whole problem.
I tried hooking up svideo to the SD tv but the only way that will work is to turn off the cable box and go through the setup wizard changing it to SD mode. That's just too much of a hassle to do regularly. Seems like changing to 480i only in the wizard would be just as much trouble.
Seems like this should be SO simple, yet it's looking impossible. I could easily just get another cable box for the other TV but the point is all my recorded shows are on the 8000HD. I'm paying for DVR and would like to watch the recorded shows on the SD tv as well as the HD. In fact I don't really care about anything EXCEPT the recorded shows being piped to the SD tv.
Is there maybe a simple way to split off the YPbPr to go to the SD tv and convert it to svideo? I'm running out of ideas.

Charter also said they have NO plans to offer the 8300hd that would solve the whole problem. They may have no plans now, but I believe 8000HD production has ceased and SA is concentrating on the 8300 platform. Unless Charter has a huge inventory of 8000HDs, they will have to add the 8300HD. I doubt it takes much more to support the 8300HD than it does for the 8000HD.

I've been trying without any luck to get both SD and HD out of a Charter SA8000HD. I've just about decided it will not happen....
With the SA8000HD (under SARA software) there are two ways to view SD.
1. Click the "Settings" button once, scroll down to Picture Format and with the right arrow, find 480i (which in my case provides a much better picture than 480p). After a couple of seconds, the image will flip and "voila". This is the best way because you maintain all controls for playback of recordings.
2. The other way, and in this case you can use your S-Video input, is to select the SD channel then you press the PIP button to get the previous channel in the small screen. Then you press the SWAP button and get the SD channel in the small screen. Then with the TV remote, you select the input that has the S-Video (but it could be one that has the RCA Video cable, if you don't have S-Video). And you have your SD picture. The S-Video or the yellow RCA Video plus the two audio cables must be in the middle row for ports in the back panel of your SA8000HD.

Sometimes we beat our heads against a wall until it hurts, and wish we had just paid a few bucks more right from the start. I did that trying to find a way to split my family room cable box output to feed an adjacent TV with a different viewing angle, so we could watch the same program in the kitchen as in the family room.
(See thread, "Whatever happened to wireless TV?" http://www.hdtvoice.com/voice/showthread.php?t=13907)
I gave up, and just had the TWC tech go into the crawl space, split the family room coax, feed it up to the adjacent kitchen, and install a second cable box. After weeks of research, looking at solutions costing $1000-2000, the obvious solution was done in a day for a $30 service call and $8 per month for another box. Now we routinely watch two different programs, or watch the same program on adjacent TVs with no worse problem than a wierd Poltergeist echo.
It sounds like you have a similar problem, with a trivial two-part solution. (1) get a second DVR box ... which allows you to record the same program on both boxes simultaneously for viewing flexibility. (2) Temporarily move the first cable box back and forth ONLY until your already-recorded programs have been viewed if you HAVE to watch some of them in SD. The DVR rental hurts a LOT less than banging your head, and you'll love the future freedom.

I see you say if you reboot the system the audio dropout problem goes away... how do I perform this?Read the FAQ on "Tips for SA STBs"
I discovered that by having the PIP turn on...Although this works for live programming, it will not work for archived (recorded) programming. The video will be present, but the sound will be from the tuner, instead of the HDD, or visa versa.
You can archive by redoing the setup wizard for an SD output (480i standard) only, do your recording, and then redo your wizard for HD. If available, upgrade to the SA8300HD, everything works on it. Again, see the FAQ on "tips for SA STBs"

You can only rent STB in the US , the unit I have has the passport firmware by pioneer, and those connection just do not work no matter what format I'm in but if i turn on my PIP the smaller picture will be the output picture with sound to both outputs coxale and the rca it does not matter if it's live TV or saved to the HDD as long as that PIP stay on I do notice that if i swap pictures the sound is louder on one and not the other both output working at the same time I just select the input on my TV to view the picture.
My Tv is a Pioneer SD-643HD5
Sorry, I was referring to STBs with "early" SARA firmware (latest firmware allows archiving). Keep forgetting about passport. I thought the passport people had no issues with archiving...

Hello all!
New to HDTVoice....my first post. :)
Anyway, I have a few issues that I hope people can give me some input on.
1. Received my SA 8000HD the day after I had my Panasonic PT-53WX54 delivered. PQ is decent on SD and good on HD. My biggest compaint ATM is that there are visible vertical lines in the picture when viewing anything from the STB. It's most noticable during HD programming with dim light scenes and fade to blacks between scenes, commercials. At first I thought it might be my component cables (decent quality, not the provided garbage ones), but I tried another set with the same result. I don't get the lines (worst one is 1 inch wide near center of screen) when I watch DVD's on the other HD input. The strangest part is that I can see these lines even when the STB is off but the TV is left on that input and turned on. :mecry:
*NOTE: I have not yet tweaked the settings on my new Panny but am going out today to buy DVE and go through service mode to clean up the picture. Hopefully I'll get my HD PQ to excellent! Could this just be a convergence issue???
2. I use Rogers Digital cable in London, ON. When I ordered the HD PVR I asked if I would get the 8000 or 8300. I was told at first that I would receive the latter but of course I ended up getting an 8000. I really want the newer box as I can easily buy it at any big box retailer here in the city (but I won't as I get 4 months free rental with my TV purchase). When I called Rogers they told me that the 8300 wasn't available for rent yet. Can anyone confirm this? Seems kind of silly when you can buy it everywhere and it has many improvements over the 8000.
3. I am getting some strange audio problems.... If I switch between HD and SD a lot I end up loosing my audio entirely. I have the optical audio connected to my Denon receiver. A simple reboot corrects this most of the time but it's incredibly annoying! Is this a problem with the 8000? Are there any firmware/software fixes for it that I should as Rogers to send down the pipe?
4. The box I received was obviously used (multiple marks on it right out the box). What are the chances I got a lemon that someone else already sent back because of the problems I'm having now? I know that's a hard one (if not impossible) question to answer but was hoping that a field tech might be watching this thread...
Any help on these issues is GREATLY appreciated.

I would first reduced Contrast and/or Brithness, using your TV menu, and see the difference.
Almost everything you mentioned is a "known issue" with the SA8000HD (vertical lines, audio dropouts with some receivers, etc.)
Get yourself an SA8300HD somewhere... (see my answer regarding this issue in the new thread you started.)

Thanks for your replies! I thought about the fact that all the big box stores are carrying the 8300 and decided to go to a Rogers retail outlet today. After speaking to the rep there I found out that Rogers does indeed have the 8300 available for rent! Man I hate uneducated customer service reps on the phone that think they know everything.
Anyhow, after finding this out I promptly returned my 8000 to them and exchanged it for a shiny new SA 8300! Lo and behold all my major issues have vanished! AMEN.
Thanks for the quick replies and I hope to chat with everyone soon regarding getting the most of my new toys. :hyper:

Sorry,
I never meant to imply that the 8000HD is an inferior product, just that it has some know issues. If you had the chance to get a free upgrade to the 8300 would you not do the same?
I'm happy that I got the 8300 as it resolved my 'unique' issue (vertical lines) and some know faults like sound dropouts (at least with Rogers in London). I also happen to like the added features that the 8300 has (HDD fuel gauge, more stretch options, shows what the signal is 1080i/480p...).
I have encountered one strange thing with the 8300 so far though. After playing around abit I somehow got it 'stuck' in 480i mode. A simple reboot fixed the problem and haven't seen it happen again.
Again, thanks to all for your help.

The point is this, the SA DVR, whatever the model, can have as many different software versions as there are cable providers. The SA8000HD that I «purchased» performs differently compared to those with Rogers or other providers. I do not have a single complaint and the only outstanding features are the activation of DVI (expected within the next 60 days) and Firewires.
As for the 8300, I have no use for a DVR which can be accessed by other televisions in the house. And the HDMI over DVI for me would not be an advantage as I use an a/v for digital sound, when appropriate, and analog sound for ordinary programming.
My SA8000HD has the "Copy to VCR" feature and I do have the percentage of recording capacity used by pressing the "B" button, after accessing the list of recordings.
Michel. There are several models of SA8300HD. One simply "replaced" the SA8000HD. The other is the "multi-room" model, which has just come out formally from SA. You can check out the various ones on the SA site.
Sorry I confused the thread by not mentioning that the SA8000HD issues I was referring to were associated with Rogers Firmware.

Well that will be resolved when we get DVI activated. We will then have "Auto-Fix" which will provide the appropriate format automatically.

Whoa!
I wasn't trying to say that I have a better unit than you do. All I meant was that the 8300 is a better unit for my particular scenario.
Its great that the 8000 works so well for you and that it has all the available options enabled (minus DVI), I just wish mine was the same. My only suggestion was that the 8300 may be a bit less glitchy as it's a newer/refined model (unlikely though, all models have their own quirks), however I totally agree that it's more the software driving the 8000/8300 (Passport or SARA?) and the cable provider that matter. A good analogy might be a computer running Win98 vs. WinXP. Depending on the hardware, the users requirements and the other software that runs on it either one can have its pros and cons. For your situation in particular the 8000 could very well be better suited for your task than my model.
Regarding the HDMI/DVI.. I do wish the 8300 had DVI as that's what my TV has, but no big deal as I can always buy a converter. I don't even know if the HDMI port is active on my unit, or the Firewire either. Maybe down the road I'll try to use the firewire to connect to my PC network (if it's at all possible) and the HDMI to my TV (not likely to see any PQ difference though, just makes it less susceptable to interference and a smaller cable).
Cheers mate
HDMI is active, but Rogers doesn't officially support it if you run into difficulties. Firewire is not at this time.

In the next 6 months, the Broadcast flag will be implemented upon a producer's request. The Broadcaster may elect to advise the FCC (30 day advance notice that the Broadcaster intends to apply this remedy) that it will downrez the Component to 480i for non compliance with HDCP. Therefore, may I suggest that you prepare yourself to install a cable with HDMI to DVI connection.

Really?? That sucks! I can however see the broadcasting community doing such a thing. I would imaging though that only movies (OTA, PPV, VOD) would probably be using HDCP.
It would create a riot if regular TV shows required a DVI/HDMI connection. Not to mention that there are a lot of televisions and older STB's out there that do not support DVI/HDMI (don't have a port) or HDCP (I've read that some older Sony's have problems with it). If the broadcasters begin to use HDCP on all 720p/1080i content there will be plenty of pissed off people!
I do thank you for the heads up though. I'll be sure to go out and get a converter in the near future. I was planning on it eventually to see if there is any difference in PQ over component (I doubt it) but this gives me another reason to do this quicker.
Thanks!

The FCC has not excluded any programs from having a Broadcast flag, not even news programs.
To view a program or movie, when a producer has requested a broadcaster to put a flag, the following will happen:
1. If the signal receiver has an HDCP output device (DVI or HDMI) then the HDCP software will look for a compliant monitor, therefore one with an HDCP input device.
2. If the signal receiver does not have an HDCP device, then the signal will go through without any hassle as dictated by the FCC. This will take care of legacy equipment.
Concerning item 1 above, if the monitor receiving a signal from a signal receiver equipped with an HDCP output device and the linked monitor is connected via Component and there is a broadcast flag, the following may take place:
a) The signal will go through as an HD signal,
b) If the Broadcaster has elected to give advice to the FCC that under broadcast flag condition that the broadcaster will downrez, then the broadcaster will cause the signal going through and reaching a non compliant device (Component) the resolution will be downgraded to 480i.
All of this will take time and broadcasters will be tolerant but will also be cognizant that a producer may elect to go elsewhere if content protection is not assured. So on the long run in my opinion, as confirmed to me personally by Silicon Image, Gefen and the Canadian Digital Television, the HDCP requirement of having compliant devices when a flag is present will be of great importance.
Those with legacy HDTV's can use old STB's without HDCP devices and be guaranteed an HD signal at all times. The problem are for those with an HD DVR...they all have HDCP devices.

Hello all,
I have a SA8000HD with a DVI output and YPrPb Component output.
I have had my SA8000HD hooked up to my Samsung HDTV for months now using the component out to get my HD picture. I had also had the DVI cable hooked up, but the TV says there is no signal from the SA8000HD.
Today I came home and had no picture. I told the TV to change from component to DVI and bingo I had a message!
The message was:
DVI ALERT
Your HDTV does not support HDCP
Please use the YPrPb component connection to watch TV
I went through the SA8000HD set-up screens and everything works great in HD until I am done and exit set-up and try watching TV.
What I see is the banner at the bottom of the screen that has the program name etc, but the actual show is not there.
To watch TV I disconnected the DVI cable and rebooted the SA8000HD box. HD working on the component as it was.
Any ideas why I can see the channel banners and not the show?
Any ideas on what HDCP is?
Love to get the DVI working. Here are my specifications.
Samsung HDTV model HLN4365 DLP
SA8000HD
SARA 1.83.16.a10 home server edition 1.3
Also like to know if having both DVI cable and Component cable hooked up at the same time could cause this problem?
Thank you for looking.

May I suggest you contact your cable provider and find out how close they are to activating DVI. Each cable provider has a different version of SARA software, so as you see, it becomes quite a personal thing between you the user and the cable provider.

The DVI went active today, that is why the DVI message showed up. Before today I had zero video out the DVI port. Now I can see the SA8000HD setup screens via the DVI port. I can even see all the channels banners on the bottom of the screen that tells you what channel you are on, what you are watching, etc. I just don't see the actual show.
So what I see on the TV is a warning message and what channel I am on.
Later I intend to try disconnecting the component video cable and just trying the DVI and see if that fixes the problem.
You could try running the setup wizard without the component video connection hooked up and see if it works.
HDCP is High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (in future see the FAQ on acronyms).
There are a lot of issues with DVI and HDTVs and although cable companies activate STB DVI ports, most don't officially support that connection, so don't expect much help from your service provider.
See also the FAQ on "Tips for SA STBs". You must be in one of the few areas with DVI active on the SA8000HD. Most people do not have that port active.

Tried it without the component video cables and still have the same results.
Your explanation of HDCP is good. Thanks. This probably explains why the DVI works and I can see the channel I am on etc, but has no picture. The DVI is waiting for a handshake from the TV to decode the signal. My TV is however HDCP compliant in the specifications. I just don't understand why the two units won't work together. :(

Keep in mind that your TV input for DVI could need Picture adjustment, just like a Component or composite input. With your TV remote, select Menu then Picture and see if Contrast, Brightness, Sharpness, Color will improve things.

I have been playing with it all night. It is an encryption problem.
I have been reading up on HDCP. The DVR needs to send the transmit signal to the TV and the TV needs to respond back. If all goes well they start the HDCP decryption of the video. This explains why I have a perfect picture of the channels, channel guides, banners, and even channel descriptions.
Everything is perfect except the picture does not appear above the banner. This appears to be because the HDCP is not finalized.
The HDCP signal is transmitted and if it does not finalize the verification process with the TV, then it displays the "DVI Alert".
The DVI Alert message is being sent from the SA8000HD DVR to the TV via the DVI cable. This message along with all the above is displayed perfectly.
During my reading on HDCP, it explains that once the signal is broken from a working HDCP transmitter like a SA8000HD or a DVI DVD player to the TV, you WILL get this "DVI ALERT" message. This is normal and happens if you change the TV's Imput source and then back again. The only way to get it back is to reboot the HDCP transmitter, (SA8000HD) or the (DVI DVD player). This forces the HDCP connection to start.
In my case the HDCP transmitter is the SA8000HD. After 5 seconds it does not make the correct info from the TV and times out and then displays the DVI Alert message. Since the DVI video is fine, it continues displaying everything except the actual video of the show.
I can only hope that the DVI port is not completely set-up with the HDCP codes etc. Since I have found out there are a lot of variable of HDCP since it came out, I may never get it to work. I can only hope for the future.
I learned most of this just by searching with goggle on "HDCP how it works".
The best info I found was here: http://www.digital-cp.com/data/HDCPSpecificationRev1_1.pdf
Kind of complicated, but you can get the drift of what they are taking about.
This explains why component video works fine is because it does not have HDCP encryption handshaking to worry about. The component out send out the video and does not care if anything is even on the other end of the cable .

Fliersrr,
We were told by Videotron that DVI on the SA3250HD had problems handshaking with certain makes of HDTV and explained, in part, the reason activation of the DVI on SA8000HD was delayed.
My suggestion would be to:
1. Request a replacement from your cable provider of your present SA8000HD.
2. If that does not resolved the issue, that you wish to get a refund of your original purchase or the supply of a current model with a properly tested DVI or HDMI input. And I would do this and fight for it no matter how long ago you purchased your HDTV. The matter at hand is critical for the normal enjoyment of your television and any proposal to use Component in lieu of DVI is unacceptable.

OK, no time to read all of this, but does anyone have problems with the 8000HD locking up. If I try to do anything with the hard drive while I am recording, my box completely locks up and reboots itself. This includes if I try to stop the recording. When I called Comcast the other day, they said there must be a problem with my box and they replaced it. It happened again, but when I called to day, the lady told me that was a known issue that they are trying to resolve. Does anyone else have this problem?
Jim
I did have a problem with my box locking up if there were multiple output formats selected (480 and 1080). If both are not selected the DVR works fine and the channels change easily but the non-HD channels are displayed in a smaller windows. I had to choose what was more important.
I've tried everything and have read the posts on this site. My biggest problem is that I have no set-up wizard. Is this normal or do I need another box? TWC did not give me a manual and I set the box up myself. I have downloaded a User Guide from SA but none of the diagnostic/settings menus come up. Is it possible that TWC Disabled the Settings Wizard? I believe the software is Passport. Also, I cannot get a signal to come through on regular channels (through the coax) or Video 1 (through S-Video). When these are connected all I get is a flat grey screen. Does TWC Disable these ports?

Most of the time we discuss SARA firmware on this site. Since you have Passport, things are different. There is a small item on passport in the FAQ on "Tips for SA STBs". Also you may wish to do a search for "SA8000HD + passport" using our search engine. Done - results below:

The SA8000HD doesn't have all the outputs active at the same time. Are you abel to upgrade to the SA8300HD in your area?
I am upgrading to the SA8300HD on Monday. Just in time. I have messed with the 8000 so much I think I crashed my hard drive (it no longer accesses the "List" even after reboot).
Hopefully, this will fix my problems. I'll keep you posted.
Thought I would follow up on my own post. TWC- Charlotte admitted that they disabled the set-up wizerd. Only the Techs can access it through some combination on the remote (the phone people don't know the code). This is what the 800 number told me anyway. I had two techs at my house and they never accessed it. I have finally gotten an upgrade to the 8300 and the set-up wizard is still blocked but I fixed the problem by choosing 480 and 1080 in the output format and it does not screw up the TV like it did in the 8000.

You do have a set-up wizard. Just go to http://www.scientificatlanta.com/consumers_new/
click on Cable Boxes, then DVR, then your model. Then sign up for the free explorer eclub. They have all the manuals and guides you need. The wizard you are trying to find is built in. It is a matter of pressing the correct buttons at the same time. It is all explained in the down-loadable manuals you will find in the eclub.
The one you are looking for is this one http://www.scientificatlanta.com/ExplorerClubGuides/getting_started/4003114B.pdf
Hope this helps you get going. :lurk:

Thanks for the links but they are no longer active. I did not receive a users guide or installation guide with the 8000HD/DVR. Everything is working fine but I still want the guides. Any other sites where I can download them? Thanks.
Both links in post 352 are active on my computer. The second is a pdf, which will take some time to download if you're on dialup - a little over 220k. The first worked fine for me too...
Try another browser or another computer? Provide a friend with the link, have them download the pdf and e-mail it to you?

I tried both links using IE and Firefox last night. The first link opens to the Explorer Club and I registered and went to the users guides which I know are PDF. Clicked on the 8000HD files to download but was immediately taken to a page that stated "you may not be allowed to view this page". The second link did not work at all. Checked all security settings in each browser and all is how it should be. I was able to download the users guide for the 8300HD awhile ago when I thought that it was the box I would get. I'll just refer to that if the need arises. Thanks.
Is it possible your service provider or your settings on the browsers are preventing pdf downloads? I know you said your security settings are "how it should be"...
Are you able to download pdfs from other sites? A simple websearch for almost anything should bring up some pdf links you could try.

After several attempts to dl other PDF files or even display them in both browsers failed, I dl version 7.0 and all is well. The link works fine. I had been running version 6.1. I had been able to dl PDF before. Something must have become corrupted in 6.1. Thanks for the help.

My first post here, but reading for quite sometime. I got my Sony KP51WS520 on Sunday and my TWC-Brooklyn issued 8300HD STB yesterday. And like some of the members here I cannot, no matter what I try, get it to enter the initial setup wizard. I called tech support last night and the guy I got completely glossed over the fact I could not enter it, saw no need for it, and explained sometimes newer models don't have the same wizards as older models.
When I explained that I received a manual specifically for the 8300HD that stated how to do it, yet it still did not work, he replied that by hitting the settings button on the remote and then going into the advanced settings menu I could set the output format and do the same thing the setup menu would do. I am a complete newbie when it comes to HDTV setup etc... but everything I have read both here and on SA's website seems to point to completing the setup wizard for best performance.
Is this the case? Does it matter what connections I am using to hook up the STB to the TV (in this case I am using component) or is there any other factors that you know of or could surmise which would prohibit me from entering this menu.
This HDTV/Home Theatre/Cable Confusion universe is daunting on its own. But when the proscribed method in a devices manual does not work it couldnt be more frustrating. Thanks for any help in advance.
Component video is fine. You could try HDMI (See the FAQ on DVI/HDMI Information).
You probably have Passport firmware, so the setup is performed differently than it is for units with SARA firmware, however, the setup guide information in the FAQ "Tips for SA STBs" may still contain valid information.

Thanks 57U.
In fact I do have the Passport firmware but I was not aware that the setup wizard would be any different for that as opposed to the SARA FW. Especially when your cable company hands you a manual that clearly states how you should go about setting up your STB yet it seems to be incorrect.
I have been trying to search through these forums for other NYC Time Warner users who also have the 8300HD box but were unable to access the setup wizard but so far have come up empty handed. But then again starting from scratch in the world of HDTV and absorbing as much information as I have in a 72 hour period has left me a bit overloaded and thus easily frustrated by something as simple as this.
I might try hooking it up via S Video, as I do not have a HDMI to HDMI cable to test with, to see if maybe then I could get into the wizard. I hate to not have my SD signal to be of poor quality because my inability to run the wizard keeps me from properly configuring the box.
Are there any other Time Warner NYC users who have had a similar issue?

As far as the FAQ is concerned it was probably the first reference material I reviewed when getting the 8300HD.
I tried this:
"1. Tune to any digital station.
2. Depending on the STB, you may need to use the composite, S-video or component video connections.
3. On the box itself (not using the remote), press and hold the "+" (select) button for a few seconds, the "envelope" (mail) light will come on. (the + button is the "bulls-eye" in the middle of the 4 "arrow" keys). (on the newer STBs like the SA8300 it's the "select' button)
4. Press the "info" key next.
5. This takes you to all kinds of information. "
Holding select never got me the mail light to come on. In fact I have yet to see that light come on for anything.
I also tried this:
"The SA3250HD, SA8000HD and SA8300HD have a setup wizard that you go through. See if you can find the page that guides you through the wizard. If you don't have it, follow the instructions below.
1. Turn the STB off.
2. Press the "Guide" & "Info" buttons simultaneously.
3. This takes you to the wizard.
4. If you've got a 4:3 TV the wizard is very simple.
5. If you've got a 16:9 TV, then go into the "advanced" mode (which is still pretty simple)"
With no result except to dimple the skin on my thumb and pointer finger by pressing so hard for so long.
To date the only settings menu I have succesfully entered has been the one I get when I hit the settings button on my remote. Now unless Time Warner in NY has gone about disabling every firmware enabled menu, which seems unlikely but of course possible, I maybe doing something wrong or have a faulty box. ANy ideas? Similar experiences? Suggestions?
I really do appreciate it.
Press Menu then "A"?

Hi,
I'm a Time Warner Cable user with an SA8000HD, I've been trying to read thru all the posts, but only got thru page 8. My problem is that while going thru the advanced settings menu, I believe I chose a resolution that my TV could not display, (720p). Now I have no picture. Is there a way to reset the box back to the default settings, or a way to get to the wizard. So far pressing the Select button has not worked.

Two ways to do it,
1. With the SA8000HD ON,
- Press and hold "Select" button until the Message Light blinks, then press VOL- key to indicate you want to select a picture format setting. The LED display shows HdSr to indicate that the set-top is in the Picture Format mode for HDTV settings. Keep in mind that the last setting entered will be the default setting. ( In my case, I didn't want 480p nor 720p)
So,
For 480i, press CH+ you will see 480i briefly displayed followed by SEt
For 1080i, press VOL+ you will see 1080 briefly displayed followed by SEt.
and you are done.
2. With the SA8000HD OFF but the TV ON,
On the SA8000HD, press Guide and Info keys at the same time and follow instructions at your TV.
Metman24 is in NY, probably with Passport firmware, so if the above doesn't work, see the FAQ on "Tips for SA STB". There is a set up manual link in there. Download it and use the setup suggestions....

Has anyone been able to get the DVI output to work on the SA8000HD-PVR? I am told by Videotron it should be active. I am trying to get it to work with my Pioneer PDP-4360, and I am getting no signal whatsoever. No "Your TV is not HSCP compliant" message, no Setup Wizard, NOTHING. Everything works great with Component.
Thx in advance...
It will not work with your Toshiba as the firmware versions between SA and Toshiba are not compatible. I understand that Toshiba is still on 1.0 or something with the DVI connection on that particular TV.

I am trying to get it to work with my Pioneer PDP-4360, and I am getting no signal whatsoever.
Sorry, I have not added to my profile yet, but that is why I specified which TV in the question.
I had read that it would not work with my Toshiba, so when I bought my new television, I only bought a regular HD STB (Pace). I was planning using the 8000 with the Plasma via DVI-HDMI, and the Pace on the Toshiba via component. However, if it will not work with the Pioneer either, then I will probably exchange it for an SA8300HD PVR, which I understand is HDMI, and has no compatability issues.
Actually, on that subject, do you know if on the 8300, I can have SD and HD outputs simultaneously? Or deos it have the same limitations as the 8000?
Sorry, should have read the question instead of looking at your profile.
The outputs on the SA8300HD (yes with HDMI) are all active at all times (on Rogers).

Thanks.
Any idee on the original question about wether the 8000's DVI should work with the Pioneer PDP-4360 HD?
I honestly can't remember if/when Videotron enabled DVI on the 8000. I thought they did, but I can't be sure. If you try, it's best to use a direct cable, rather than one with an adaptor. See the HDTV FAQ "DVI/HDMI Information". Many people are pleased with the product from Monoprice....

When I called Videotron, they told me it was active. And of course, they blamed it on one of 3 things that are not in their control: The cable, the TV, or compatabilty issues. :boo2:
Well, I can test the cable and the TV, but not compatability. So I figured I would try to find out if anyone has the combination of STB & TV, and if they had it working with DVI.
I guess so far no luck..... anyone?
Apparently some people have their SA8000HDs working with DVI. They have firmware version 1.88... I cannot guarantee it'll work for you...
