I just saw that they sell the Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 DVRs at many Internet sites. If i buy this can I install this instead of my SA4200HD? Will I have to contact cablevision and let them know? Will they even let me do this since they havent released this STB yet? Thanks!
Contact your cable company to see if they'll "activate" the set. Most cable companies scramble the digital signals, so you can't simply hook up an "unauthorized" box.
It gets even more difficult with a DVR. These cable DVRs will not work when the cable is not connected, so the "head end" must be "monitoring" or something - two way connection required. This prevents people from recording programming and "lending" the STB to someone else to watch.
Most Cable companies require you to purchase or rent the STB from the cable company or authorized distributors in the area.
Were you talking about the SA8000, or the SA8000HD. What's the cost?

I'd wait for the Cable Card ready DVR's are out before buying anything. That way you'll be sure of getting the services you pay for from your provider. U.S. providers are required to make Cable Cards ready and available to customers by July 1st. Many are already ramping up production of them.
In the meantime, if your cable company lets you rent the DVR, go ahead... With the technology changing so quickly, renting is a good alternative at this time.

I sent an email asking when Cablevision would be making the SA8000HD STB available to its customers..
Below is the reply I got..
Makes me wonder if it will be the SA8000HD or something else.

Thank you for your email inquiry. Cablevision plans to distribute a converter that enables customers to control live TV, instant replay and also allows picture in picture display. We are planning to distribute this converter in order to enhance our current service within 2004.
Could be almost anything. They may even be talking about N-PVR. This is a Network PVR that will have the programme stored on their server and you'll have access to it. I wonder if they caught the part about "HD"?

We have that service here with Comcast, they call it On Demand. A coworker of mine likes it, but he doesn't have any sort of DVR to compare it with. I tried it, but didn't think that much of it.
