View Full Version : Advent HT3061A - 30" widescreen issues

I bought the Advent HT3061A - 30" widescreen model recently. Knowing nothing about the brand and being cautious about the 'bargain' pricing, I've tried to learn as much as I can about the TV. I've been playing with it extensively for the last week and I can answer only some of the issues I have found.

The brightness does not remain constant. Through much playing around and searching of the web, I've found that the TV will automatically compensate for changes in brightness on the screen. Especially noticable in scenes that involve a bright window moving on and off screen, causing faces to darken and lighten very noticably - NOT ACCEPTABLE. Solution - If you turn your contrast down below 15, this will stop. Of course to compensate you will likely need your brightness at approximately 40.

Service Menu: Press (in order, one at a time): SLP, MUTE, AV, MENU. Use the number keys to toggle through the different setup pages. Use Channel -+ to move up and down through the settings. Use Volume -+ to change the settings. Press 0 to exit.

I hope that some folks can help me with the issues I can't fix or figure out:

1. There is noticable horizontal streaking caused by bright text when using the component video inputs (from either my Sony DVD player or Motorola HD PVR digital cable box). Switching to the S-Video input eliminates the bands. This is especially noticable on the blue screen with white writing on DVDs which display: This Motion Picture Has Been Rated... (such as the start of The Lord Of The Rings, or Master and Commander DVDs). The streaks/bands appear to be the inverted color of the bright text: on the blue screen above, the white writing causes darker bands across the width of the TV; on HD broadcasts of the hockey games a bright yellow shape causes a horizontal blue bar across the white of the ice - this is less noticable than the other blue screen. I've seen this issue on other TVs but I can't find a forum discussing it or solution on the web.

2. Static writing such as DVD menus or the internal menu of the DVD/PS2/Cable (through either the component or S-video inputs) jitters occassionally. The jitter appears to be a rapid flicker or very slight and very fast movement of the text/shapes. It can't be seen on a moving picture or on anything that isn't static for multiple seconds on the screen. The TV menu has a VCR on/off setting which is handily described as reducing jitter. Turning it on does make the jitter reduce but does not eliminate it.

A call tonight to Advent customer service yeilded a non enlightening response of "it sounds like you have a conflict with your components. You could see if Future Shop will exchange it". When pressed, the rep said these things should not be happening and are not known issues. Seems odd to have that VCR setting though, eh? ;)

Can anyone help? Suggest a setting in the service menu to adjust? Are these odd issues and it needs to go back?

Help!?!

I wish I had answers for you, but really I'm just in the market for a TV, and noticed the bargain cost of the Advent. It's hard to find any information on it, I've looked but come up with very little. I saw your post, and figured I might be bold enough to press you for some information :)

I'm curious how you're liking it. Seems like you're having some issues with it already. Have you tried using it with any gaming consoles? I'm looking to make my HDTV a gaming screen more than anything else.

Also, can you tell me if the set is 480i/480p/720p/1080i?? Futureshop says it's all, Advent only mentions 1080i on their website. The Brick contradicts itself. I can't seem to get a straight answer...

I have one of the slightly earlier Advent's - the 32" HD one (forget the model offhand). It does 480i/480p/720p/1080i - in 720p mode there is some change in the color balance.

I've also seen the brightness change mentioned by TravAndAlex - but found I could eliminate it by lowering the contrast (go figure!) My "custom" setting is for less contrast and more brightness than the factory "standard" mode setting.

This might sound like a stupid question, but besides these little issues would you consider yourself happy customers ?

I picked up an Advent HT3061A from KMart as we display model clearance for $375 (regular price $799). Since it was a display model, I had my doubts, but I double-checked everything and really couldn't pass it up.

I have a Windows XP Media Center Edition PC hooked up to it via a Radeon X700 DVI connection and a Motorola 6412 connected via Component. Both run a 1080i signal to the TV. I noticed that if I run a 720p signal, I can use the zoom button but 1080i doesn't allow the size zoom.

One thing I have noticed is that 1/3 from the top there seems to be a "wavy" part of the screen that is only noticeable if you can see the left side of the screen (ie, your watching a 4:3 letter boxed picture). This is only slight and not really that noticeable unless your looking for it.

The overscan on this TV seems to be pretty large. I had to use a registry hack for Media Center to set the outside boundaries of the Media Center UI so that I could actually see the outside parts of the interface (over double the MCE default for a back projection TV). I've also noticed that much of the time when video is zoomed in to a person's face, the top of thier head is cut off. Comparing this to the same media playing on my notebook the top of the head and slightly above is fully visible.

The TV's IR input seems rather easily distracted by other remotes. For example, my JVC AV unit's remote for volume down switches the picture type on the TV and the DVD button on the JVC does a Channel 3. Thats about all I've found so far conflicting, though.

It seems like the TV looses sync a lot (only for a second) when moving through menus of the Media Center. I'm not sure I've seen this happen from the Motorola PVR, and may be something to do with the PC/DVI connection. I've haven't tried swapping the DVI/component (having the motorola on the DVI) to see if its a port thing.

I've only seen hi-def in the stores and a friends Pioneer 50 inch plasma. I can't really say whether some of the problems I've ran into are because this TV was a display model on 14 hours a day for who knows months. However, the image quality of the TV seems amazing compared to normal TV. For someone looking to get into Hi-def and doesn't want to pay a premium or needing a large screen, I would definately recommend this TV. It works exceptionally well with being hooked up to a PC via DVI (unlike some HDTV's like the Toshiba 30").
