I bought a LG RU-44SZ61D (44", DLP) last Friday. So far, so good. I've been watching shows OTA. I don't have cable or satellite. I've watched a handful of movies over my old DVD player while I wait on a new one that has been back-ordered. I've been mildly surprised at the PQ using my old DVD player - can't wait to try out the new one.

I'm pleased with the purchase and PQ, now if I can only get longevity.

Any other LG owners out there?

I've been debating for the last couple of months which set to buy. I like the sharpness of LCD on the Hitachi, but not the screen door effect I noticed on fast action scenes. I've also read how the heat from the bulb can hurt the LCD over time which bothered me. I've looked at several Samsung DLP sets and RCA DLP sets at various stores under various conditions and wasn't very impressed with the clarity on any that I seen. I wasn't impressed with an Optima set I seen either.

Last week I seen a LG set at Ultimate electronics for the first time and for the first time I was very impressed with DLP. The LG was using the HD2 chip, and it was more clear than the newer Samsung using the HD3 chip which is supposed to be a newer/better chip. So for the first time I'm now excited about DLP after seeing the LG model.

I'm going to wait a little while before buying anything though. Mitsubishi is supposed to be coming out with a DLP in mid July at Ultimate Electronics that uses the even better HD2+ plus chip, and sometime in the next few months LG is supposed to be coming out with the new models using the better HD2+ chip. I want to see what those look like before buying a set. I'm definately impressed with LG though after being unimpressed with Samsung.

Similar to my experience: I started to go with Samsung site-unseen through a powerbuy, but when I caught glimpses of the new HD3 chip Samsung I was unimpressed and backed out on the power buy.

At the same time I started to notice the LGs. Not only did they have a crisper image but I liked the overall color better and I believe the picture is brighter than the Samsung.

The HD2+ chip has peaked my curiosity. I will get out and browse them when they come out but for now I'm pleased with my purchase. I couldn't wait on the HD2+ as my standard 27" bit the dust about four weeks ago.

Good luck on your decision.

Hi..how's The Lg Been Doing?? I'm Thinking About The Ru-44sz51d. Not Too Many Stores Carry This Line. What's The Latest On The Hd2+ ? It Seems The Lg Dlp Is The One To Watch. Hope Yours Is Still Doing Fine...what's The Life On The Bulb?

Got 2 more inches (52 vs 50). But, no HDMI or "Wide" mode. Samsung had better blacks and vertical viewing angle, but the LG has much better color. I felt like I had to adjust the tint on every channel of the Samsung; the LG once I set the tint looks great on all channels. BTW, I turned in the Samsung only because it had a broken power switch; Best Buy didn't have a replacement, they offered the LG.
Question though, the LG manual states that the set is "sharpest" at 720p. I have DirecTV HD through a Samsung SIR-360, and I think it looks sharper at 1080i. What's the theory behind this statement? Also, does anyone know how to access the Service Menu?

LG RU-44SZ61D (44", DLP)

I bought the same set about 3 weeks ago and am very, very pleased with it.

The PQ is the best I have seen. It really is stunning

I currently am using DirectTV with the generic-HD package and I am also using a standard antenna for HD programs which are broadcast in HD and the picture that this screen gives is worth every cent I spent on it.

If you guys have any questions just fire away!!!

Hey, I just noticed on my LG that when a show is labled "Letterbox", the image is 16x9, but in a 4x3 box (black stripes top/bottom left/right). This is with the LG set at 16x9 full and the STB (Samsung SIR-TS360) set at 16x9 piller (no stretch for 4x3). The only way I've found to correct this to use the whole screen is set the STB to 4x3 zoom 1. This was a pain last night switching between CSI: Miami and LAX. Am I missing something, or is my LG just limited? I want Heather full size, dangit!:wow: And BTW, what is the purpose for tagging a broadcast as "Letterbox" anyways?

The best way to get Heather FullScreen in all her glory is to get HDTV. I have mine thru comcast. If you order HDTV service use the component or DVI input, you have them both in Hi-Res.

One neat feature I discovered, dunno if the manula says so... but here it is.

If you set the comcast HDTV decoder box to 16:9 and turn on 4:3 override to 480p, then the digital inputs on the LG will switch automatically to HDTV mode in 16:9 and zoom any 4x3 signal to whatever you zoom setting you have. I have it set to zoom2 so I get the appropriate ws pix depending on HD content or normal cable or digital cable.

pq for this unit is sweet, although it took 3 tries for BestBuy to finally deliver a perfect unit.

I bought an RU44SZ51D last week. So far I'm not impressed with it. First of all it's missing a pixel (black spot). Secondly when I set the auto picture to normal, it sends the contrast to 90+ (100 max) so the picture looks like crap. I have to adjust the video manually to get something that's acceptable. Also, I have to run the brightness close to max otherwise it's too dark.
However, and there always seems to be one, when I watch TV in the HD mode (on HD channel), the picture is awesome. I also have a cable company problem - when I have the cable box in HD mode the regular channels have poorer quality, so I have to keep swithcing back and forth.

BTW I paid $2199 at BestBuy and also got a free Elton John concert video and a $200 gift card.

I guess I need to get on the phone with LG to have them come fix the problems.

My .02 :(

I see Circuit City is now selling the RU44SZ63D. But it doesn't say if it is the HD2+ chip or HD3 chip.

Anyone know???

That article at PCMag is from 1/10/04 so it's very old news. Not sure if you were pointing out something relevant in the article. Just thought I'd mention the date.
