View Full Version : How to post a poll?

I know that under the message window there's a box for "Yes, post a poll with this thread"...tried that under "Preview Post" but can't see the poll. How is it done?
As you can see, I found out by myself.
It took me months but now I know for sure that both my wife and visiting daughter have no ability or taste to appreciate the video quality of HDTV. They definitely are not videophiles. Yesterday proved it out as they both viewed (on my insistence) a beautiful documentary and at one stage they got uninterested in the subject, which is quite acceptable, but neither put in a single good word for the extraordinary pictures (real life quality pictures as if one is in a gondolier) of the scenes of Venice eventhough Venice is the destination of choice for my daughter for her next European trip.
Friends of mine have been toying with the idea of buying a HDTV for the past 2 years knowing full well, they told me, that their wife would be difficult to accept the purchase and that they fully expect to be looking at it alone.
What is your case?

A snowy black and white 9 inch screen with 1 speaker is enough for my wife. :(
I'll say sometimes. She likes watching movies.

Tell me , Lee, your wife enjoys these movies because of the content or partly also because she has it in HD? In other words, does the HD part have any attraction for her at all? Would she say "Wow, what a beautiful picture !"?
I doubt any woman would chose to see "their" movie selection on a small screen vs the big widescreen. But this poll concerns HD...do they (women) or can they appreciate a nice quality HD picture for what it is? I hope some of you guys are lucky.
My wife yesterday suggested that I join the Old Age club nearby so I may invite old age buddies to come and view some HD stuff ! See my problem?
By the way, are there women posters here visiting, reading and posting on this message board? That would enhance my feelings about women right now.

As with most technology, my wife really didn't care about HD. Give her a garden and she's happy. :)
Anyway, now that she has seen HD, she loves it, but she still doesn't really 'care' about it, if you know what I mean. She's happy with the TV speakers too, whereas I can't stand not having the Denon on. She also doesn't see the big deal about 5.1, etc., whereas I live for 5.1. We went to Harry Potter this morning and I thought the new (to me anyway) DTS demo was way kewl!
my wife loves watching HD with me, now she wont even watch regular cable anymore...
Movies at loud levels she likes but isn't the biggest fan like I am.
MAX,

I'll go with content. I'd have to agree with DD's comments.
The only technology I've seen her get excited about is the broadband for her online games. Let her connection go down and see who gets on the phone with Comcast right now and wanting answers. :)

Hey, Lee. You do know I'm a cable guy and you're a Dish guy? We're not supposed to agree on anything, are we? :)

My wife will never comment on how good an hd broadcast looks. She says I'd probably watch someone taking a dump as long as it was in HD. She's stubborn like that, since she really didn't want a big screen tv to begin with.
However, she's been mentioning that she'd like to replace the 13" tv in our bedroom with a flat panel tv. When I talked about the details (edtv or hdtv, cable box or P.O.D. model), she said something like "if we're going to spend the money, let's get one that gets the best picture". I can't remember exactly what she said, cuz I was taken off guard by the remark.
It's about every 6 months that she lets something like that slip out.

This poll is quite interesting...
and with only 3 votes for "Very Much so" out of a total of 8 votes, are we discovering the HD is really a man thing ?
Wish I had given this a few more days to collect further feed back !

Wish I had given this a few more days to collect further feed back !Well, for one thing, you made a politically incorrect assumption right off the bat and asked the poll in such a way that only men would respond. I don't know how many women out there would respond that their 'wife' likes HD, etc. :)

So you know women who purchased an HDTV set and would be qualified to answer the question: "Does your husband enjoy watching HD programs with you"?
If there is such a divine woman reading this message board, I would appreciate to read her post and then seek to have her opinion, from time to time, on HDTV related matters.

Well, I don't know about HDTVoice, but I do know a few women here on our local boards who are into HD just as much as, if not more than, some of the men. In fact, my wife suggested we get the HDTV instead of simply replacing our broken 36" with another 36". Then there was the thread over on AVS from the woman who was looking for our help convincing her husband to let her get some more HT HD goodies. :)
If you are interested in the sex makeup of the HD viewing public, you might try a poll asking who makes the HD decisions (husband, wife, both) or something similar. I'm sure it will show the majority are still male, but I think technology is growing on the opposite sex. My wife will watch her shows no matter what the format (and so will I for that matter), but even she admits they are much better in HD and she is more than happy with our purchase. :)

Just do a search for her posts.

Hi mfabien! Found your poll~! I'm making it my personal crusade to encourge women everywhere to both demand and purchase the best TV they can afford~! Why should men have all the fun buying expensive electronic equipment? No fair I say~! My husband has configured and purchased all four computers in our house, last new computer, MINE, I wanted to put it all together . . . . I opened the first box and he could hardly restrain himself so I relinquished my desire to set up MY own system and let him hook everything up.
I pretty much researched and selected ALL components our first home theater system and the only thing he pretty much didn't let me have my way with was the speakers (read "so tight he squeaks when he walks" LOL~!!!)~! I wanted to spend a whole lot more but I gave in and figured IF I had gotten everything else I wanted that I would give in on the speakers . . . . go figure that. I even got a very nice home theater wall system AFTER taking a big family vacation to Virginia Beach and Williamsburg in June of last year with his parents and both his sisters and their families, negotiating skills are quite important in a marriage ya know~!
So now my operating "MO" is I buy the stuff, he puts it together~! Everyone is HAPPY~!!!

My Oh My!
You know, one day I bought and had installed a complete sound system for my nice 57" HDTV. The installer was still there when my wife came back from shopping. And the installer decided to try out the system with a DVD he brought containing demos of different movies. He selected "The Gladiator" and when the Subwoffer blasted, she came down to tell both the installer and myself to put an end to that monstrous noise immediately.
Several hours after, she made me promise to never turn on that sound system while she is in the house or else she would go away. So, next day, I dismounted the sound system and brought it back to the store for an 85% refund. So you can see how impress I may be with your posts.
In truth, I'm not miserable not having the Sound System. I'm not a passionate DVD movie fan. I do love sports and concerts...I have DVD's for Elton John, Yanni, Rod Stewart, Emma Zhapplin, Diana Krall, etc but I must tell you that my speakers with Dolby and Surround sound in my 57HDX82 provide me with a very enjoyable sound. And when she's not there, under the Theatre TV menu, I can increase the Base sound to my liking. The video quality part is the important ingredient for me.

We don't crank ours up alot, especially since the kids go to bed at 8:30 and 9:00, respectively, BUT . . . . . one night when we first played our new Lion King DVD and the scene with the stampede and it literally sounded like the elephants were in our house not to mention all the other animals . . . our two Shelties about came unglued~!!! In reality, my ears/hearing over the years from listening to music too loud, probably couldn't appreciate the difference between 500.00 set of speakers or 5,000.00 set of speakers~! Heck what we have now is a heck of a lot better than our OLD OLD OLD wishing it would die for the past 3-4 years RCA 26" stereo TV . . . . and can you believe he STILL won't let me throw it away, it is in the computer room and the kids can watch VHS or play GameCube on it (sometimes we're nice and let them play on the BIG TV~!).

To tell you the truth, I wasn't after loud sound but I was looking forward to have more separation of sound.
And I knew I could control the sub's volume independently, if needed. Maybe I should have given clear instructions to the installer...but SHE wasn't even in the house when the installation started and I was completely attentive to the installation taking place.

mfabien, a little negotiation goes a LONG way~! see pic of the entertainment center I "negotiated" for~! Except for A/V equipment the shelves are all filled with Disney Snowglobes on mine.
oops forgot the link http://www.thefurniturewarehouse.net/monte_carlo_enterainment_full.htm the columns slide out and have storage for DVD's and CD's at both the upper and lower level.
Oh and I had to start watching The Young & The Restless again since they broadcast in HD . . . . and I had previously quit watching soaps~!!!
:rofl2:
and I guess since I'm one of the very few women that post on this forum I will officially adopt the pink smiley face for all my future posts~! well it looks pink on my monitor although the description says "red"~!

The poll is closed, but here is my experience anyway:
I have recently bought the SA8000HD STB. My wife likes the picture quality, but not enough to justify the purchase.
What made the big difference was the DVR capabilities of the STB. She is really impressed with this feature and really likes it.
Now, I have to sit down with her and explain how to use it.......

I buy it and set it up. I have one of those tight husbands also. I really wanted HD since I visited my brother's house and saw a MNF game between the Bucs and Giants. I don't even like either of these teams and I had to see the whole thing. I guess I will just have to visit my brother more often.
Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to buy one in my area because only 2 of our locals have gone HD and our cable offerings are slim.

Caveat being... usually no locals in HD, unless the sub in in an O&O broadcast area. And even then, it's only NBC and CBS.

slim cable offerings. 2 locals in HD. Sounds to me like cable and satellite will offer at least the same amount of HD, but satellite will have additional on the non-network side as well.
