This seems like the best place to post this question(?).

Our new RCA HDTV has capability for web browsing via an ethernet connection, which we are trying to connect to an older Linksys wireless router. We have no luck making a connection to our existing wireless network.

Does anyone have experience with a similar connection?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Are trying to connect wired to the router or wireless.

What is your networking configuration presently?

All you may need is a bridge:http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?prid=602&scid=36

Also... check your manual in regard to setting an IP address, subnet mask and default gateway in the TV's network adapter. If it is DHCP enabled... it's a non-issue, but if not, you will be required to enter the static IP infomation to connect to/through the router.

If you haven't modified any of the router's network settings, you can probably use an IP address of 192.168.1.1xx/255.255.255.0 and default gateway to 192.168.1.1 on the RCA.

We are trying to connect wireless to the router. We have tried settings as suggested - and both the Linksys router and an (original) Airport Base station to no avail.

Thanks

I could use a little more detail.

What is the 'airport base'? Is it a linksys? Or is it an old 'Apple' airport?

do you have the 'base' configured properly (WEP, SSID, etc)?

have you checked that the router 'sees' the 'base' or the TV?

Have you tried wired (temporarily)? just to see if it works?

Right now you have no idea as to whether it's a wireless problem or a simple configuration (settings) problem.

Does the TV mention internet configration details (DHCP/Static)?

Right now it could be a few discrepencies.

BTW... what is your level of expertise with networking? Just so I know how to present suggestions for troubleshooting.

Not much in the manual.
But... the TV does use DHCP. Go to the 'ethernet setup' menu and enter "reset all" to go to defaults.

If this doesn't work, then I'd suspect either a setup issue with the 'airport' and/or the router.

So... if you can get a long ethernet cable to run to the router to test, that would eliminate the TV and router if that works. Then, (you) we can investigate what's going on with the wireless setup.

If you come back... ;)

I've tried everything, including direct connection to a computer and router via ethernet, with no results, using DHCP and assigning addresses. I've submitted a question to RCA, and will let you know what they suggest.

Thanks

Have you gone into the Linksys setup and checked that DHCP is enabled and will allocate enough addresses?

When you connect the TV wired, does the router get a "link" light on the port?

Actually... what you could do is directly connect the TV to the cable modem temporarily. If that doesn't work, then you can be pretty sure it's something with the TV (either setup or hardware) and not the wireless/router stuff.
