I am looking for a NEW TV, LARGE SCREEN FOR HDTV for Football Season.

I presently have a HITACHI 60" PROJECTION COLOR TV that obviously is from 2000. I have Direct TV and Ultimate TV. It is in a corner of our family room so cannot hang anything on the wall.

I am so un-informed and have no clue what to look for.

My budget is pretty much in the $6,000 range so pricing should not effect what could be the best TV to purchase.

We would love having something that is not to technical since we are not too much hands on people.

So where do I begin???

When speaking to SEARS I was told to wait until August when the new models come out since we would be buying something now that is from last year.

ANY THOUGHTS AND ASSISTANCE would be so appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand most is personal preference, but need some guidance on where to go otherwise just listening to salespeople.

THANKS!!!!
Have a great weekend!

For a start - visit the FAQ section. See the FAQs

Types of HDTV
How large an HDTV to buy
What you need to do to your new HDTV
Etc.

$6k is a lot of money, if that's just for the TV. You'll have all kinds of choices, anything from CRT-based RPTVs to Plasmas.

Thanks 57...The 6g is what I can spend. Obviously I want the best that I can get, but Plasma, LCD, Projection. It is all greek to me.

Just wanted a few ideas to look at so when going to Sears or wherever I can tell them what I was recommended. Also do I wait or purchase now.

I am not looking for price as much as what is best.

Will look at FAQ as you suggested. Thanks!

Interestingly, in the area of HDTVs there is no "best" there is only the "best" for your needs. Each type of TV has its advantages and disadvantages as outlined in the FAQ on "Types of HDTV".

For example, the "best picture" may come from a properly calibrated CRT-based RPTV, while some people may object to the size or colour of the "box" it comes in.

Although the "corner" of a room may be a good place for a TV, it's absolutely the "wrong" place to place it from a home theater experience (Surround sound) standpoint because it makes placing the speakers awkward and the speakers will typically also sound awful when placed that way. Many people believe that the surround sound experience is almost as important as the visual experience.

Simply "throwing money" at an HDTV, will therefore not get you the best HT experience.

I am looking for a NEW TV, LARGE SCREEN FOR HDTV for Football Season....

Olympics come by before Football starts...suggest you don't want to miss that ! New models...doubt new features will be that dramatic to justify delaying your purchase. Unless anyone here can mention such new features.

My suggestion is to pick an HDTV ready set, and select a cable provider who can provide you with a DVR/STB such as the SA8000HD so you may record any programming you may miss. That step will double your pleasure. Of course the same applies for a satellite provider who can also supply a DVR such as the Dish 921.

Unless you are facing the HDTV set directly-on with the speakers all orientated into the direction and arrangement for listening you will have problems with the surround setup. Part of the HDTV experience is 5.1DD surround and improper speaker setups (I have seen way-to-many) makes it awkward at best witha corner setup.
Your corner setup is dictated by what? A fireplace (again)?
