I can get the HLN for aprox. $2400 and the HLP for approx. $3200. The only major difference that I can tell is that the HLN has the HD2 and 1000:1 contrast and the HLP has the HD3 and 1500:1 contrast ratio. Is there enough difference to justify $800? I am also considering the Sony 50" lcd rptv. Just wondered if the contrast ratio makes a huge difference.

Thanks in Advance, Max

The contrast ratio makes a difference in the 'blacks' that are displayed. Too low a contrast ratio and the blacks look 'muddy'.

To see the difference in the HD2 and HD3 you would probably have to do a side by side comparison. Look at the very dark scenes.

I thought the HD3 chip had a much better contrast ratio than 1500:1? But my experience is with projectors and the HD2 and HD2+ chips. The HD3 was slated for rear projection.

The extra $800 is a jump but if its not an issue go with the HD3.

Both LCD and DLP are continuing to improve the technology and improve contrast ratio with each new generation. Color improvements too.

Thanks Lee,

I have been researching alot the last couple of months and I've been getting alot of contradictory information. I think I'll wait it out a little longer until all the facts can be verified. As always this site has alot of useful information.

Thanks to All, Max

I called Samsung customer service. They told me that HLP is vastly improved over HLN.

HLP a seven seg color wheel which should improve darks.

HD2+ is 3000:1 HLPXX74W will use these. I couldn't wait that long. (Nov. or Dec.)

I just ordered a HLP5663W for about 3500.
