Excerpt:
Monday, Samsung SDI announced that with their own cutting edge technology such as "Slim Art," it has developed a CRT display for digital televisions for the first time in the world. This product is named "Vixlim" and is just 35 centimeters thick, which is slimmer than the former model by 15 centimeters. 32-inch televisions with this display are going to be slimmed down from 60 centimeters to 38 centimeters (15.2").

If the newer CRTs are as slim as the LCDs and DLPs, then just based on PQ, CRT might be a better choice for me. But screen sizes of the CRTs needs to be seen, can they compete with projection TV screen sizes, 40"-50" ? Also what needs to be seen is how much they weigh.

Many people (including me) were thinking that CRT was on its way out in a few years, well not just yet. It might fight back to stay in the game. :)

I have a LCD flat panel for my computer monitor. In future I might opt for a slim CRT over LCD.

Well in my opinion, *just my observation over the years*, CRT tv's still look the best overall.

36" - 40" was the biggest CRT I've ever seen. I'd guess the available sizes would stay the same and they would compete with the LCD flat panels and entry level plasmas.

If the price is right, CRT could reclaim the computer market though. I believe new computer sales are predominately shipped with LCD's now?

I'll never attempt to lift another 36" WEGA again, my Dad's almost killed me. I'd hate to wrestle with their 40 incher. :eek:

What price would be the right price?
CRT are currently 1/2 to 1/3 cost of high end LCD panel, yet this year LCD outshipped CRT for first time. By 2009 CRT will make up less than 5% of computer monitor sales (mostly in 20"+ professional graphics editing). CRT will never reclaim anything in computer world.

Currently CRT has following advantages over LCD in computers
* Cheaper
* Higher refresh rates (for games or video)
* Better color accuracy
* Wider Viewing angles.

However these advantages are greatly reduced in the 7th generation panels. Viewing angles are up to 170 deg. Color quality is less than Delta 1 in all but the darkest (blackest) colors. Pixel response times are down to 12 or 16ms and dropping (which means TV, movies, and most games are now smear free on LCD).

LCD use less ectricity, can be connected by an all digital connection, produce virtually no heat, have no geometry problems, are brighter, and produce no flicker.

There are only 3 CRT computer monitor manufactures left (down from like 10 in the 1990s). LCD will likely completely replace (100%) CRT within a decade on the computer front.

What does this mean for HDTV? An LCD panel is an LCD panel. The case, controllers, and inputs may vary between an LCD computer monitor, and an LCD HDTV but the panels in may cases are identical. As more LCD panels are produced the cost per panel drops. Expect the prices on LCD panels and thus LCD monitors/LCD HDTV to continue to drop every year as supplies, and yields increase.
