this does not bother me but when I run a 4:3 mode and it cut's off the edges of the screen the sidebars are gray, and it drives my wife crazy she says they are bright and distract her, does anyone know of a way to turn them black so when you are viewing in a 4:3 the side bars are black???

I have the Mitsubishi 65" WS-65869

I'm pretty sure there is a way to do it in the service menu. I don't recommend doing this if you plan on watching a lot of 4:3 television as the reason the bars are grey is to attempt to minimize the burn in caused by watching 4:3 images on a 16x9 Television. My suggestion is just use one of the formatting options for a little while until everything is 16x9 :)

that is good enough for me, I will tell my wife to live with her stretched image so we don't mess up the screen.

Absolutely use some type of stretch/fill. The grey/black bars WILL NOT prevent burn in.
