Is the HD Monday night fooball game broadcast in a 16:9 format?

Splicer
08-03-2004, 08:29 AM
We shall soon see ;) . Seriously, I think it depends on which market one lives in as to if it will be HD or not. I would certainly imagine it would be broadcast in true HD which would give the full 16:9 picture.

It was HD last year.

Is the HD Monday night fooball game broadcast in a 16:9 format?

Here in Montreal I had it in HD via Boston when I had ExpressVu satellite hookup. And it was super quality coverage including the flying over field camera shots (which 57U says to be in 480i ??).

Now with cable, my feed comes from Detroit and expect it to be the very same coverage. And this year I'll be able to record the Monday night games with my SA8000HD DVR and view the game on Tuesday morning if I need to retire early or get sleepy.

Yes, but sometimes a 2.35:1 movie may be shown on an HD channel.

Bengals? This is what I love about football. The Bengals actually have a team that can compete and win. Its not like baseball where the Yankees have a 75% chance to win it all almost every year. You go Splicer.

Go Patriots!

They don't carry ABC HD and the MNF games are not part of the Sunday Ticket, only the 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM EST games.

"MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL" CELEBRATES ITS 35th ANNIVERSARY SEASON WITH A BLOCKBUSTER SCHEDULE, INCLUDING THE OPENING NFL GAME OF THE SEASON

Game Slate Includes Multiple Appearances by League's Elite: Super Bowl Champion Patriots,
NFC East Champion Eagles, NFC Central Champion Packers & the Resurgent Cowboys

ABC's NFL "Monday Night Football," the most successful and longest-running primetime sports series in television history, celebrates its 35th anniversary with a blockbuster schedule for 2004, it was announced today by George Bodenheimer, president of ABC Sports and ESPN, Inc.

The elite teams in the NFL will have multiple appearances on "Monday Night Football" this fall, including three each by the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, the NFC Central champion Green Bay Packers, the NFC East champion Philadelphia Eagles, the AFC West champion Kansas City Chiefs, the NFC West champion St. Louis Rams and the resurgent Dallas Cowboys who, under Bill Parcells, qualified for the playoffs last season for the first time since 1999. Every playoff team from last season will appear on MNF this year.

Emmy Award-winning announcer Al Michaels returns for his 19th consecutive season as the play-by-play voice of "Monday Night Football." Joining him for his third season on MNF is the legendary John Madden. Both Michaels and Madden were nominated for Emmy Awards again this year.

"'Monday Night Football' is a great American sports institution due to the quality of its schedule and the unique way ABC Sports has presented the games to the viewers," said Mr. Bodenheimer. "It is fitting that, for our 35th anniversary season, the NFL has once again given ABC Sports a terrific schedule of games featuring the league's best teams and the top television markets. In this historic year, we are thrilled to be able to have the legendary announce team of Al Michaels and John Madden continue to provide their special insights, knowledge and humor to our coverage of this great schedule of games."

The 2004 MNF campaign begins with the opening NFL game of the season, as the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, led by two-time Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady, host NFL co-MVP Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts in a rematch of last season's AFC Championship Game on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 9. The 2003 schedule continues on MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, as the NFC champion Carolina Panthers host Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers.

The schedule continues as Randy Moss and the Minnesota Vikings return to "Monday Night Football" for the first time in three years, traveling to Philadelphia to take on Donovan McNabb and the NFC East champion Eagles on SEPTEMBER 20. That's followed by a fierce NFC East battle when the Washington Redskins host Bill Parcells and his Dallas Cowboys on SEPTEMBER 27. On OCTOBER 4 Ray Lewis and the AFC North champion Baltimore Ravens host Priest Holmes and the AFC West champion Kansas City Chiefs.

In addition to the AFC Championship rematch with the Colts, the Super Bowl champion Patriots travel to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs on NOVEMBER 22, and travel to Miami to meet the Dolphins on DECEMBER 20 in a key AFC East match-up.

The Cincinnati Bengals host the Denver Broncos on OCTOBER 25. On OCTOBER 18 the St. Louis Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers meet for the fourth time in five years on MNF. On NOVEMBER 1 the game between the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets is a rematch of what was voted the greatest "Monday Night Football" game ever. In that game in 2000, the Jets came back from a 23-point 4th-quarter deficit to defeat the Dolphins in the "Miracle at the Meadowlands". On NOVEMBER 29 the Green Bay Packers host the St. Louis Rams at Lambeau field in what could be QB Brett Favre's 200th consecutive game played. The MNF season wraps up on DECEMBER 27 with two of the top teams in the NFC, as Marshall Faulk and the St. Louis Rams host the Philadelphia Eagles.

The schedule continues with a wild-card playoff doubleheader on SATURDAY, JAN. 8, 2005.

During last football season "Monday Night Football" finished 3rd among all primetime shows on network television, the highest-ranking in the history of the series. It was in the top-10 among all primetime sows for the 14th consecutive season, and finished first in the key male demographics.

All "Monday Night Football" games will be broadcast in HDTV.

The following is the 2004 ABC NFL "Monday Night Football" schedule:
(All games air Mondays at 9:00 p.m., ET., except where noted)

SEPTEMBER 9 Indianapolis Colts vs. New England Patriots (Thursday Night)
SEPTEMBER 13 Green Bay Packers vs. Carolina Panthers
SEPTEMBER 20 Minnesota Vikings vs. Philadelphia Eagles

OCTOBER 11 Tennessee Titans vs. Green Bay Packers

I believe it is in HD, at least that's what others are saying. Did they mention "Enhanced TV" ? That has nothing to do with the resolution, it's a feature you access through abc.com.

If you put your location in your profile I can be more specific in responding to your wishes about Fox. For if your Fox station is owned by Sinclair, you will not have it in HD on Comcast. And if your Fox station is owned by Cox, then you probably won't have Fox on Comcast.

Sinclair has not reached agreement with any major cable company about carrying its channel's HD signal. They want to be paid and have a markedly different agreement than Comcast has with other channels.

I'm in Baltimore and just out of luck. I've spoken to representatives from both sides and it is very grim, very little hope by Sep 12 with Fox goes HD.

BFG
08-09-2004, 07:01 PM
No, ETV and HD aren't related. ETV has nothing to do with the video on ABC. It's like a Trivia ype interactive thing on abc.com It's also been used for things like Millionaire etc...

Splicer
08-09-2004, 07:16 PM
Right, I realize that but does ABC use ETV for programming other than and including HDTV???

Splicer
08-09-2004, 07:23 PM
The reason I am asking is that if you look at ABC schedule, shows in HDTV are noted as such. Tonites game only states ETV, but not the HDTV. There was room directly under or over the ETV notation.

Well I think it sucks  ...For some insane unknown reason I get audio and video on my HD channel of ABC and it is in sync but the picture is 4:3 :boo2: and the audio is pro-logic/stereo  ...Whats up with this??? My local (out of cincinnati) ABC is HD compliant. Or at least it is according to that antenna dot com site...The black bars are too distracting (not to mention I get a thin perfectly green line on the left side of the picture only on ABC that goes from top to bottom of the screen) to watch the game. I am SO SO disappointed. So much so that I am watching some Burt Reynolds movie instead. The analogue ABC is simply horrible, watchable but it makes me disgusted to...So much for my very first football game on this set...If this is the way it is going to be, screw it. And HDTV...This is no way to get the HD format pushed ahead... :boo2:

John Madden may not have an "FM" voice (it's not any worse than Howard Cosell's voice was, if you ask me) but is there any other broadcaster who knows his football and the players more than Madden? Bradshaw? Sanders? Who?

Everything looked good OTA where I live. PQ was good even though it appeared that my local was having some transmission issues during the first half...momentary freezes/pixelation at fixed intervals. My receiver was decoding the audio as 5.1 but there was no sound coming from my rear speakers. I was OK with that since it was HD.

Regarding Madden's voice, I think he has a good voice for TV. He's the best color man in football in my opinion.

Splicer
08-10-2004, 11:25 AM
Oh, I am not saying Madden isn't one of the best for the job by any means.

In pro-logic I did have kinda sound from the rears but the center was all pro logic. I flipped it to stereo and had a better surround experience IMHO. The audio definitely came across as Digital as the Digital light on my Onkyo was lit up. The audio from NBC's brickyard was also pro-logic and sounded pretty damn good actually.

The video however between NBC's Brickyard 400 NASCAR race and ABC's Monday Night Football was virtually indistinguishable with the favor in NBC's corner. To me, in my completely honest opinion, ABC's HD was not nearly as detailed as NBC's wide screen SD (I was told it was not HD even though it certainly appeared to me that it was, it was that good). I had alot of herring bones in the marker stripes on the field from the Goodyear Blimp aerial shots.

Don't get me wrong, the game was excellant at the end, down to the gun even but the picture, while stupendous, was just not enough to 'WOW' me the way NBC did. I am soooooooooooooo hyped for NBC to do the Olympics  !!!

You know how you can tell the difference between SD, ED and HD....

SD, you can see the stands.

ED, you can see people in the stands.

HD, you can see the mustard stain on a guy's shirt in the stands.

Last night I watched ( some ) of the game on ABC here in Phoenix on my Mitsi 55". It started off with a small bar down the left side < about 3/4 inch > and a larger bar down the right side < maybe 1 1/2 inch >.

I put it in expanded mode to get rid of the damn bars.

After awhile I checked and it was now full screen without the expanded mode.

But the picture seemed strange. It bothered my eyes to watch it. I don't know what it was about it or why it bothered me. I've watched HD on CBS and PBS and it's great but somehow the picture on ABC sucked big time. I turned it off just before halftime ... couldn't watch it anymore.

Did anyone else have problems with it?

Whenever we get a shot of Al Michaels and John Maden, I get the sense that there little "studio" is surrounded by part of the audience in a tight fit...and that in every NFL stadium. Therefore the sound engineer must increase the volume of their mikes over the ambient sound.

Doubt College football stadiums have similar conditions in accommodating a suite for television announcers.
