Do a search on this forum as there are some with this player. Faroudja processing produces a clear, sharp image, almost three dimensional imaging with this player.
Check to make sure you set the unit for progressive scan, that the input you are using is connected correctly using the component inputs using good cables for better thruput, then check the setting and connections on you TV and try playing a different DVD. My nephew thinks the fish are going to come out and get him when we play "Finding Nemo" on our Faroudja processed DVD player. I would check what I mentioned as you should not have as soft a picture like you said, no, not with that player!

No... they should be both progressive for the best results from DVD.

I did mean progressive. My thought was the DVD player should be on interlaced and the TV on progressive.

My old player is a basic Hitachi model 735u and it has a sharper picture compared to the Denon. Most every web search says the DVD-910 should be a far superior sharper picture.I am exchanging my player for another Denon 910 from my dealer.I hope it is better or I will be looking for another player.Maybe the Denon DVD-2200 is a better choice?? :canada:

Why not return the Denon and keep the Hitachi then?

There are no "rules". Use what look best to you!

Sometimes the deinterlacing of the TV is superior to the DVD player.

:canada:  The Hitachi only has DD5.1 and I want DTS5.1 or 6.1 capability also.

Well now I'm confused!

The Hitachi is progressive scan and passes DD and DTS.
Here's the spec sheet:
http://www.hitachi.us/tv/browse/dvd/pdf/DVP735U.pdf

Sure you don't want to keep it?

Sometimes people confuse "sharpness" with quality - let me cite several examples.

A lot of people prefer a 1080i signal over 720P because it looks "sharper" but in actual fact, the 720P signal may be "superior" to some because it's "smoother".

Another example - most Films (movies) have a very "filmlike" quality and look very smooth. If you could "measure" resolution on a film, it's equivalent to several times the resolution of HD, however, some people look at a 1080i source and say it's "sharper" than a film, even though the resolution is actually less.

Another example is SVM. Many people "like" a picture with SVM turned on, even though it distorts the picture and exaggerates edge effects.

Ratman;Well you had me looking.Although it does say in the spec.sheet "dts Digital Out"'if you go to the trouble shooting section of the Owner Manual under "Problem"-No DTS Audio Out;This player does not support DTS Audio.False advertising???

OH well... it happens. They even have the "dts" logo on the bottom

Anyway... here's my take on your situation. You have a 'old' DVD player that is progressive scan (and you like it's picture quality) and supports DD5.1 (which will also pass DD-EX). The only feature you don't have is DTS. The question is: Is DTS that important to justify the additional $$?

Just playing out all of the options...
