I am looking to get a fairly inexpensive dvd player until the HD ones come out later. Reason being - my old sony is starting to give errors on power up every now and then. I have been looking around, and I want to spend less than $120. I was looking at the ps sony ns725p - but my sony tv should have the same de-interlacing technology (I would assume). Plus that sony model has a ton of junk like Block Noise Reduction (BNR) and Custom Picture Mode that I don't need. The Onkyo DV-SP301S also looks like a good buy but I haven't read anything about Onkyo's DVD quality. Suggestions? I would really like input from someone with a sony tv since we "should" be using the same de-interlacing tech. Thanks all!

Because a manufacturer sell both TVs and DVD players does not mean they use the same technology. Often some things are subcontracted to another manufacture who builds to specs fro Sony, Hitachi, Panasonic etc. Insides are basically the same just cosmetic details are different.
At the 120 or less range most DVD players are the same. Take a look at remote controls- ease of use in a dark room. Cosmetic's like color of exterior to match the rest of your components. I would try to stay with name brands like Panasonic,Toshiba or Sony over Apex, Memorex or what you might find at your Kroger.

Ok - cool. The onkyo has a screen saver which the sony's don't (but my old sony does). Not that I leave stuff on the screen all the time - but if I pause a DVD and go to the bathroom or make a snack and get distracted - it's a nice feature.
As for the remotes - I'm going to get a sony av3000 soon so that shouldn't be a concern.

The 725 is an excellent player and in progressive mode it will put out a better picture than your TVs de-interlacing will.
BTW it does have a screensaver.
IMO you should hold off for a bit and look at the new models coming out this month, 5-disc changer/SACD would be nice extras to have in a progressive dvd player at $150. If you're going Sony that is.

I don't want to hold out too long because I think my current player is about to die. I get an error message once in about five times I turn it on. I don't really have a need for more than one disk at a time. SACD would be a nice feature though. And now that I know the sony does have a screen saver I might just get that one. That and the fact it does the de-interlacing better. Thanks!

The DVP-NS775P single-disc PS dvd/sacd player comes out this month $130. Just so you know. :smokin:
