I have the RCA DRD450RG satellite receiver. One of the menu settings is "picture size." The options are 4:3 and 16:9. Since I have a 16x9 TV, I have set this option to 16:9. What is this option really doing for me since I can't seem to notice any difference when I change it to the 4:3 setting. I couldn't tell any difference when I still had my older 4:3 TV set either.

It should be setting the output of the receiver to match the ratio of your display. When you switch it to 4:3 do you get bars down the sides of the picture? Do you have the image stretched at all on the TV when the receiver is set to 4:3?

On DVD players a setting of 4:3 means that you actually lose "information", whereby certain lines are not sent to the TV.

If you set the player to 16:9, the full resolution is sent, but the TV must have the appropriate stretch mode (or vertical compression on 4:3 TVs) to get the image back to the proper aspect ratio.

This issue is the same as having an anamorphic DVD instead of an "unenhanced" DVD - everyone knows that anamorphic DVDs are about 33% clearer on the appropriate TV, with the DVD player set to 16:9.

I'm assuming that the same is true for the STB mentioned.
