hey this might be a stupid question but..
right now i just have an ota stb but soon i'll be moving and want to get dish or voom or some satellite service that includes local ota hd.
will i have a need for my stb and antenna anymore or should i get rid of them? or will my current stb work with satellite so i wont have to buy or lease a new one?
it doesnt really matter either way just wondering...

You're STB is OTA only.
Satellite service for locals in HD is VERY limited and depends on your area as to whether you can be CBS (and maybe NBC). You must be in an area where the CBS station is an O&O and/or get a waiver.
So... if you move to satellite, you will still need your antenna to get locals in HD.
If your incentive is to get locals over satellite... IMO, you're better off with OTA. It's free.

If you switch to a Satellite provider you will still need the antenna. You will need a box from tha SAT company that can decode there material. Sell the Samsung or keep it as a backup. None of the satellite providers give you HD locals. You must have antenna.

well i meant ota locals. like when they install the dish on the roof they can install an antenna with it to get the locals that way. at least it looks like that's what voom does.
seems like this would be better quality than my indoor ota antenna now. i guess what im wondering is if the box that the satellite company provides will be able to plug into a rooftop antenna to receive ota locals or do i need my samusung to do this?

YES, All Direct and the Dish 811 allow attachement to an antenna-like Voom does. Yes an outdoor should work better than an indoor antenna. What I said earlier still stands true. Use the Samsung as a back up or sell it on Ebay. I my case I loaned it to a freind. Hooked him on OTA and he bought from me.
OR you copuld save it for a bedroom tuner..

Not sure of the Voom antenna but my brother upgraded to Directv and they installed a Terk clip on which is not very good at all.
Definately go with an external antenna but I would lean to picking one yourself to ensure you get the best available based on your paramters like distance from towers, omini-directional versus static versus rotating, noticability, etc.
Whatever company you go with should have different connections for sat and OTA lead. The installer should also be able to carry the OTA/Sat feed on one wire with a combiner separating the signal right before it goes into the sat box. Dish, Directv or Voom installer should be able to provide some options. If they dont, then you need to question the installer doing it.

ok cool.
yea i'll probably just sell my samsung. i'll wait til im happy with the satellite service though.
im about 20miles from all the towers at my new place. do you think one of those clip on antennas will work?
