Hey folks new to the board  . Love the site. Will be getting DishNet installed tomorrow :overclap: with the 811 HD Reciever. My question, which is better, using the DVI output or using component? Also, my set is a Hitachi 57F500. Thanx! :patriot:

Hi boink welcome (i'm new too)
congrats on joining the HD world
there are plenty of debates in here about HDMI - DVI - Y,Pb,Pr
my moto-6200 cable box was hooked up initially with Y,Pb,Pr (about a week)
(waiting for DVI cable to come UPS)
then I hooked up DVI cable... was expecting a big diff , but really was none ...
MY main goal was to open another Y,Pb,Pr port because I needed to use it...
your TV has DVI so I would say use the best tech available ( IMO )
http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat%5Fid=924&sku=26942 (30 bucks)
Y,Pb,Pr is analog - DVI is digital (box+cable+tv) so by putting an analog cable between the two , just gives you another process to go thru...
then I see your TV only has two Y,Pb,Pr and one DVI (3 digital inputs) , you didn't mention , but you may also need the port space...
my set up: stb , dvd , xbox (3)
so a little 'future planning' maybe...
but I bet 811 stb will come with Y,Pb,Pr and you will be very happy
till you make a choice . . .
Good Luck

Well first of all, I just want to say CONGRATS! Not only for finding this forum, but for also going with Dish Network! i find that they have the best balance of HD, sports, and international programming. Now as for your question...technically DVI is better than component as it provides an all digital signal from your STB to your TV, but from what I've been hearing, not all DVI cables are compatible with all devices? You may want to check with some other people just to make sure. Also, just to let you know...when the installers come and set up your 811, they are going to use component cables, but you are not going to be able to stretch the 4x3 guide to fill in your entire screen, the reason being that the component cables disable the tv's stretch mode. For this reason, it would be better for you to use either an s-video or standard rca cable on one of the other inputs on the tv to view your standard def programming and then switch to the component input to watch your hd. Not only will you be able to fill the entire screen when pulling up the guide, but you'll also be able to use the TV's stretch mode. this is good becuase most tv's do a better job of stretching than the 811 does. Good luck with your install and I hope you like it!
PQ - DVI vs CV.
On my Tosh 65HDX82 I could not see any difference in PQ between the two.
On my Tosh DLP front projector I can see a difference, which looks best, I still can't decide after 7 months. I have both connected from my Dish 811 to the PJ.
Note that the Tosh CRT based RPTV is an analog display device where the DLP unit is digital.
You'll be happy with either connection, using the DVI will free up an additional CV input on your TV.
Remember to use a DVI-D single link cable, anything else is a waste of $s. If all you can get or have is a DVI-D dual link, no problem, just a few extra wires you won't be using.

Hello,
The 811 comes with Component cables but not with DVI. Try the component first. If you like your picture, do not bother with the DVI unless you feel like spending the extra money for a DVI cable or you have more than 2 component items , like a DVD player and an Xbox.
On most CRT base Tv's the componets look fine. Those with LCD,DLP or Plasma seem to like DVI better.

I can't see the difference between the two on mine.

If one day you replace the 811 with the Dish 921 DVR, then use the DVI in order to save movies and programs on the HDD with acceptance of the HDCP protocol associated with DVI.

Use the yellow/red/whit outs on the back of the 811 into the VCR then the y/r/w from the VCR back into the 811 input 1 or 2. OR use the RF out of the VCR to the RF of the TV
