View Full Version : Another 811 question?

Hey guys, had my DishNet HD hooked up yesterday and all is well for the most part.

My question is on the audio setup on the 811. If I go into the setup menu under dolby digital, there are 3 different settings.

1. Dolby Digital
2. PCM (what is this by the way?)
3. Dolby & PCM

Now if I choose either 1 or 2, the audio going into my surround system sound fine on the SD channels, but if I watch HD I only get some weird white noise.

If I use 2 the audio is fine for both SD & HD.

I called DishNet, and the lady said that the 811 should always be in Dolby/PCM mode. Does this make any sense? I'm using the optical out on the 811 into my RCA surround optical in.

So, for now at least I'm leaving it in the PCM mode for audio. Is this right?

Your 811 should be in Dolby/PCM.

If your a/v receiver shows the audio input, watch it when viewing a HD channel and a SD channel. Mine switches from DD to PCM and back depending on the input from the 811

Do a forum search for *PCM, here is one example: http://www.hdtvoice.com/voice/showthread.php?t=11162&highlight=%2Apcm

PCM = Pulse code modulation. 2 channel (stereo, not DD).

Thanx Lee!

Am i going to damage anything by leaving it in PCM?

Nope, no damage. You won't get DD, not sure about other audio ramifications.
