Am considerning the 52-inch JVC D-ILA HDTV. A search of this site does not provide much info on D-ILA TV's so I was wondering if anybody out there has one and how you like it. In particular, are there any features you particularly like or any problems or issues which disappointed you.

I know we have forum FAQ listing...but as I weigh the CRT and its cousin, the RPTV with its convergence boards poping on some of the Mits sets (hopefully not mine), watched a few shows on the Sony LCD RPTVs at friends' houses, then saw the rainbow in a couple DLPs, I think my next new set will be LCoS unless something better comes along. I was floored at the picture of a neighbours' house with a channel that I usually watch in HD on his LCoS set....amazing colour, detail and...contrast!

I have had the 52" DILA for about a month. Overall I think it is a great TV, but it does have some limitations (just like every other HDTV on the market today). The positives are no rainbows (DLP) and minimal screen door effect (LCD). The DILA produces a very film like picture compared to the DLP sets which is neither a positive or negative. Many people prefer the much sharper, video-like picture produced by the DLPs. I really like the softer picture of the DILA, especially once I calibrated it using DVE. The negatives include a bit of chromatic aberration when closer than 5' to the TV. Some sets have it worse than others. The exhaust/cooling fan is also pretty loud, but that seems to vary set to set as well.

There are 2 or 3 good threads about the DILAs on AVS Forum in the rear projection unit area. People seem to either be blown away or really turned off by these sets in the stores, so I definitely would recommend you check them out in a couple of different stores before deciding to buy or not. I am really happy with mine (except for the fan noise).

Note: JVC says that in the fall it will also offer a higher-end version of each of these models, featuring built-in HD cable-card tuners and FireWire connectivity. Those sets, the HD-52Z795 and the HD-61Z795, will retail for about $500 more than their step-down siblings.

I saw the 52" D-ILA set at Sears this past weekend and was impressed. I went to all the neigboring sets on the floor and made sure they were all set at neutral video values to try and get an apples to apples comparison. Also, it was my impression that both the vertical and horizontal viewing ranges were much wider than the DLP's and LCD RPTV's.

I will reconsider them only if the fan noise and chromatic aberration are heard and seen. My impression with most JVC products has only been fair. Maybe other manufacturers will come out with more models or these ones will be improved.

My wife and I saw this set at the local BB and noticed that the convergence was slightly off. I mean it was at least 1 to 2 pixels even in the center of the screen. They were feeding Discovery HD and anytime there was white next to dark you got a fringe of color. From what I have read on AVS is that if the set is good when you get it then you're golden. If it's off, then it is permanently off.

I thought this set might be my next set which will replace my Sony (now flicker free but can't seem to hold a decent convergence) 51". I'd really like to see an affordable three chip DLP but I doubt that will happen anytime soon.

There is no convergence on a fixed pixel display. The original signal may have had the colour fringing, or there are "issues" with the set you saw.

You have three light sources (RBG via LCD reflectors) being focused via prism. My understanding was that it was possible for the chips to be misaligned and thus a convergence issue.

What we saw was a violet halo on the edge of white words with a sharp border. I had read on AVS that some sets had this issue and some did not. There were questions about drift over time etc. Everything I read about the fringe issue was relegated to corners. This was the bottom of the screen and dead center. I saw it and others in the area saw it and the other TVs CRT, LCD, and DLP did not have this issue.

Looks like its LCD or LCD RPTV for me in the future unless plasma gets cheaper or SED sets eventually arrive and worth the hoopla.

Just As I Expected, The Tv Is Late. Now It Wont Show Up Till At Least Tuesday. I Ordered This Thing A Month Ago And Gave Them A 3 Day Window To Hit And They Couldn't Get It Right. I Should Have Payed More And Bought It From A Local Store.

I'm also considerning the 52-inch JVC D-ILA HDTV. Thank you all for your comments here. I'm glad I read them before jumping the gun. I can get the 52-inch for $3000 through AAFES. However, I'm not going to at this time until the fan noise and quality control for color convergence is resolved. Whether you call it convergence or chip-prism problems, I'm quite happy to wait. $3000 is too much money not to get exactly what you want.

Just picked up the 61 last Saturday from a local shop. WOW! I need more HD content now. At least all the channels are broadcasting digital now, just not all HD. When the sound is off, you can hear a slight fan noise, but its pitch is non-annoying, and as soon as the sound is on, it is gone. No image problems that I can tell, and a really nice thing about this screen is the lack of glare. I looked at the Mitsu too, and their nice glossy front just had glare like you couldn't believe.

WOW I can't believe I finally got the tv. Did I mention They shipped the TV to my billing address instead of my shipping address? I guess to save $1000 or so, you need to put up with that crap. Anyway, I am very satisfied with the TV. It looks great with DTV HD via DVI. I am no expert on setting the picture, so when my calibration DVD arrives on Friday I think I will be able to make the picture look even better.
As for the Fan - exactly what XSNRG said. can't hear it at all when the TV is on!
The TV looks great on the techcraft stand that is about 15"H x 58"W x 20"D. Looks like it was made for it. I was worried about the TV being too high, and I think it would be if I would have purchased the 20"H stand. It's also very cheap @ $160.

When I was shopping around I was wondering the same thing. I would suggest reading the customer reviews. You'll read some stories that will blow your mind. Also, check shipping charges, a lot of companies charge up to $350 for shipping. I purchased mine at Big Bang electronics because they were $700 cheaper than crutchfield, and also offered free delivery and no sales tax. I would suggest buying online just for the savings in sales tax, which can get expensive depending on where you live. They did mess up my shipping address, but If I wouldn't have given them a separate billing address it would not have happened. Everything else went just fine.

I just purchased the 52" DILA from pricesrite.com - $2488 plus 179 shipping - ordered on Sunday afternoon and it was at my door on Thurs morning -- outstanding!!! Great customer service too!!!! Highly recommend -- They are a part of LGDSuperstore --- Must go internet --- BB $500 more :drool11:

When ordering - give one shipping/billing address -- also - you will get a call from your credit card company asking you to verify the purchase -- you will also get a call from the internet store customer service rep saying your credit card has been denied -- just call the creditcard company to verify --- the internet store will automatically retry the purchase on your credit card!

UPDATE! Was in Best Buy this weekend and saw the most magnificent 61" DLP from RCA - their new 2005 model, what a picture!
After falling in love, I noticed how close the set was from the back of what was an endcap aisle. It was like, unreal. Taking a look around, the set is like a plasma, only slighly more than 6 inches deep and the saleperson said it was supposed to be wall-mountable like a plasma.
If this is true, then I have found the perfect HDTV set for those who do not have the depth of space for a big CRT projection box in the same size and want a plasma without the plasma price and burn-in scenario.
The picture was clear, no rainbow, no apparent fan noise (up close) with great greens, blacks and overall contrast.
The price was $8499 on sale (vs. the 61" Sony plasma around $19,999).
So I was amazed at the size, the depth and the picture.
For the price of this set, I could do two rooms or finish a HT setup with really good components if the budget called for $20K.

I have the 52" D-ILA and i play xbox on it about 2 hours a day and still can't get over how well they look. As far as burn in don't worry about it(not gonna happen). I work at a local retailer in cincy and just to test it out the burn in affect i left a dvd menu title on for 7 days straight with out changing the screen once. When i turned the channel i saw no ill effects from me doing so. I do agree that the fan is fairly loud, can't really here it in the store but once in my home i noticed it right away. But i only really hear it once it shut's off during the cool down.

You're right about no burn-in. I emailed JVC before ordering 52Z585 because I wanted something in writing in light of the burn-in warning in the Owners Manual. Here's the response I received:

"We would like to thank you for your recent e-mail inquiry to JVC.

The mention of the Screen Burn-In is a misprint in the manual. This problem will not occur with this technology.

If you require further assistance please contact the JVC Customer Care Center directly at 1-800-252-5722 between 9AM-10PM Eastern Time, 7 days a week.

If you need assistance with an operational issue, it is best to have access to your JVC system while speaking to our support group. They will be glad to assist you.

We bought one from best buy during the Thanksgiving Sales. We love it so far. We decided to get a HDTV cablebox and wow...the difference is amazing. CSI in HDTV was so enjoyable and the discovery shows are awesome as well. Now, I want to get a HDTV capable DVD player that upscales :)
