View Full Version : Question about upscaling DVD players on my Mitsu HD TV

I am looking into getting a dvd upscale to 720p and 1080i. I know that my TV does not support 720p for some reason. I thought it would, but looking at my manual it doesn't. My problem is that I have a Mitsu Silver series that I think needs a converter (Cable Satelite) to display HD. Am I correct on this? If so, will this dvd player do anything for me or will I need a HD converter between the DVD player and TV?

I really in the dark on this whole thing so any help would be excellent.

Thanks

An upscaling DVD player's improvement (picture quality) is dependant upon a few issues.

1) The improvement can be marginal. Especially with CRT based HD sets (direct view and RPTV). It is generally a little better with fixed pixel displays (LED, LCD, DLP). So 'they' say...

2) Keep in mind, DVD's are encoded at 480i. Deinterlacing (to 480p) will make an improvement. The additional digitial manipulation of upscaling to enhance something that isn't there in the first place may leave a lot to be desired for the $$.

IMO... if you already have a progressive scan DVD player that works well, you may want to wait.

If you are looking to buy a new DVD player (don't have one), it's a consideration.

If you can swing it... try to get one that's easily returnable. Try it out and decide for yourself.

I tried one and returned it. A tad (small tad) bit of improvement, but not enough IMO to justify trashing my existing player and the additional $$. YMMV

Note: No need to cross-post. We read them all! Thanks!

LOL yeah I figured but I wanted to post in the Mitsu forum as well being as though it has a lot to do with what TV you have. Well its a 55'' projection sliver series. Cureently I have few good DVD players but I do not have a progresive. So I am going to be buying a new DVD player for that purpose within the month. I have chacked and best buy has a samsung dvd upconvert player for about 180 and I can return it if I dont like it. But I think you have to use DVI cable and that another 100-120 in investment. I'm curious if this will even work on my TV currently as I dont think I have a HD converter built in but it is HD compatible. This is really my question.

Thanks

You do not need a receiver (converter) for the DVD player. You're good there...

Some upscaling DVD players will output over component (LG comes to mind).

DVI cables can be found for $30.

And just one other point to take into consideration...
sometimes the deinterlacer in the TV is better than the one the DVD player. Maybe your existing DVD player is adequate until DVD-HD/Blu-Ray becomes available... in the near future.

All you can do is try them out and judge.
Have fun!

So the DVD players do the crunching for you. I just have to have a HD compatible TV then?

I have read through the forums about DVD players outputing through component. The samsung I looked at down at Best buy only have the 720 and 1080 above the DVI Out. Not sure because I still might be able to out with componet.

But I should go progresive scan reguardless....right? Then should I go cheap for 60 bucks progresive then wait out this new tech your talking about? What the heck is HD/Blu-Ray?

The thing is, I'm willing to try this DVD player for around the 180 because I can return it. But I dont want to go through that hassle if my TV dont take full advantage.

Isnt HD/Blu-Ray some kind of burner?

HD-DVD and Blu-ray are the potential new format/players for high definition DVD's.

gromit... without going into a lot of detail, I humbly suggest you do a tad more homework. Hope this helps.

Now now, play nice.
So here's what I think I'll do. Best Buy has the 10% off this weekend coupons for dvd players. I will buy the sammy dvd upconverter and check it out. My biggest problem is that I dont have a normal progresive scan DVD player to test against it. So I might have to buy a normal sammy DVD progresive scan as well. Then I can test side by side and see if there is a difference. But...Then I probably have to buy a DVI Cable as well. Hmmm......Well I'll have to decide. Life's hard. But if I end up buying both and a DVI cable I will test it and the one I dont like it I can always take back.

God I love America. :)

No need to buy two players.

Just set the player's output to 480p.

Well if I do that I am still paying the 200. But if i use a 60 dollar player with component then I know if the difference isnt that great then I know i can get away with a 60 dollar player for now. Grrr I'm still not sure.
