View Full Version : TSL3293HF and progressive scan?

I bought a Samsung TSL3293HF a few months ago. I'm extremly happy with it -- the picture is great (although the built in sound sucks but who cares).
I just purchased a Philips DVD793C progressive scan dvd player. I hoooked it up (via component video) and put in Lord of the Rings. The 480i mode looks fine but the 480p is out of sync -- like two different images that don't converge correctly.
The DVD player docs state "Make sure the TV's Sync Mode setting is correct. For example, on some Philips TVs, set 'SYNC MODE' to 'SYNC MODE 2'. An incorrect Sync Mode setting will cause the picture to shift off-center on the TV screen while using Progressive Scan. Check your TV owner's manual for detials on correct Sync Mode settings."
I can't find anything about sync mode in the Samsung docs or on the TVs menu or even searching the net. Does anyone know anything about this? Can I return my DVD player and get one that outputs the correct sync mode for my TV?

Make sure you use dtv video selection and not dvd on the samsung video/tv screen menu. I can't recall exacty what the tv/video selections are, but 480p will only work with dtv selection.

Thanks for the response but I finally figured out that the DVD player had a menu setting for progressive or interlaced. As soon as I set that it worked great. RTFM!
Joely, thank you for your feedback - a couple of questions.
1. I assume you set it to "P" and now it works properly in progressive scan mode. Does it work properly in interlaced mode as well, or do you need to switch it back?
2. Is there a noticable difference between "i" and "P"?
3. Is there a switch on the back of the player for i-p or is it strictly a menu item.
Thanks in advance for any insight or additional comments you might wish to make about your experience.

1. Yes, when I set the DVD player menu selection to progressive mode it works correctly through the DTV input on the TV. When I set the DVD player menu selection to interlaced it works correctly through the DVD input on the TV.
2. I think there is a slight difference but it might just be the placebo effect. For one thing I've found the picture on the Samsun to be terrific even with regular cable (not digital) in.
3. There's is not a switch for i or p exactly. But there is a phyiscal switch for component video or composite video output. Of course 480p can only come out of component so it's sort of the same thing. The point being that to get 480p, you must set the physical switch AND the menu selection.
Happy to help.

I love the picture on my TSL3293hf... my dog chewed up my remote. None of the universal remotes I have found have the picture sizing function. I think I need it to allow me to watch non-HDTV programs using the DTV input in full screen (using the zoom feature available only with the remote). I have the SA3100 STB from Time Warner. Do you know of any way to get the picture size to work with out the remote?
Some TVs have some buttons on the TV.
These may allow you access to some menu items.
The picture size may be one of those menu items.
If not, you'll have to get your dog to buy you a new remote, or go to a store with one of your other "learning" remotes and key in that button using the store's remote.

Somewhere in this maze of information and I can't locate now, someone reveled the code for the service menu for this set. After screwing it up some, I was able to recover a decent picture for the HD side. My goal was to enlarge the picture for non-HD programs when tuning into the DTV tuner. I was seeing these pictures as a smaller box within the full screen. (Bars at the top and bottom). I essentially enlarged the box a little making for more pleasurable viewing without severly compromising the beauty of the HD.
