Are there any good Combo PS units out there or is the combo unit a mistake.
Thor: Welcome to the forum. Lets use your mighty hammer to nail down some answers.
Combo unit advantages.
1. Less real estate taken up by one unit.
2. Sometimes cheaper.
Combo unit disadvantages.
1. Typically lower quality than separates.
2. Less flexible.
3. What if one breaks?
4. DVD technology is changing pretty fast - you'll have to dispose of "two units" instead of one if you want to upgrade.
5. There is no technical advantage (like a two deck VCR) you cannot tape from DVD since most are copy protected and you'd lose quality, as well as digital sound even if you could.
6. VCR's (for recording) are being replaced in most homes by digital PVRs (Hard drives), or even DVD recorders.
I could go on and list a lot more, however, unless you are strapped for space, go out and get a half decent DVD player ($200+) and a VCR. If you are going to use your VCR for timeshifting and are going to watch it on an HDTV, you should get an S-VCR (400 lines instead of 240 lines).
The fact that you are even considering a combo unit, probably means that you are not looking to spend $700-1000 for a D-VHS HD Tape recorder.
Hope some of this helps.
There seem to be very few PS combo units available. Figured there might be a reason. Just bought a Sony HDTV w/o the built in receiver because I wanted to upgrade the receiver as needed but keep the TV forever. It cost enough. Saving real estate was really the only thing I was looking at. Thanks.
