I have a 30000U JVC hooked up to a MITS and Motorola 6200. I have T2 in D-theatre. There is no sound on firewire (video is fine). Sound does come out of optical port. I can record OK over firewire. Any thoughts?

Firewire doesn't transmit the sound, only video, so you need to connect whatever you're recording from with optical also? edit - incorrect, sorry

I get sound from firewire when I record from tv. Do they not put sound on the firewire in D-Theatre?

Whoops, I guess I was wrong. Sorry, I was "equating" firewire with DVI when I shouldn't. More like HDMI...

I've reread your first post but I guess I don't understand what it is you're trying to achieve.

Is it possible that:
a) a Dolby Digital bitsteam is not passed over the firewire from the D-VHS?
b) the TV's firewire audio setup needs to be set for DD/bitstream?
c) can you set the D-VHS to output PCM/stereo to see if that works?

Just some guesses...

Umm... I thought D-Theater tapes weren't supposed to show anything over Firewire, it's supossed to be disabled, So I'm not sure why you're getting video on T2, must be a fluke...

Playback on your JVC tape deck is via Component cable plus audio hookup.

Firewire is strictly for input to the JVC machine and, of course, does not concern D-Theater movies which are purchased movie tapes.

I know the 4000 will not play anything from a D-Theater tape over firewire- found out the hard way! I sent the tape back as defective only to have the second one do the same thing! Then I tried it on my second deck and it worked- I realized that one was connected by component cables- not firewire! Too bad as that one firewire does handle everything including controlling the deck. :shootout:
At CES I listened in as a Consumer Reports reporter ran rough shod over a Sony rep for HD's inability to allow consumers to record to anything except a hard drive receiver- very interesting!
