When watching standard definition programming, do you find it better to leave everything on 1080 and have the programming upconverted or to just watch on 480?

IMHO, really depends on your display device, TV, Projector etc....

When watching SD at 1080i output from a STB you may not be able to use the TV's stretch modes to get rid of the black bars on the sides.

Also depending on the TV, the TV may do a better job of upconverting the SD signal.

Personally my preference is to output 1080i from my STB for HD and output 480i for SD. Honestly sometimes I just leave everything at 1080i, since I have a DLP unit I'm not concerned by the black side bars and phosphor burn (no phosphor :)).

When I had a CRT based RPTV I ALWAYS used the TV's stretch mode for SD viewing, no side bars.

Try different settings and see what looks best to you. If you have a CRT based unit you don't want to leave the black side bars on the screen for extended periods of time. It may not be a problem over the short term but over a long period of time I can/will be a problem.

Its a grand adventure, experiment :)

Can I 'assume' from your ID that you have a Dish 811 receiver? The 811 will output from the s-video at the same time as the component.

When I had my 811 I ran a component video and s-video cable to my a/v receiver. By selecting one of two receiver inputs I could get 480i or 1080i to my TV.

With my Onkyo receiver I could assign the same digital audio (optical) input to two different reciever inputs. I think most new medium range and up a/v receivers can do this now.

When I switched to DLP I just used the component.

Like I said, experiment, that is part of the fun, it is a hobby right?
