Hi everyone,
I am new to the HD relm and thought this might be a good place to get some questions answered. I just saw this site while I was searching for info on the Samsung DVD-HD941 HDTV. I waited for this dvd player to come out after reading about all the issues with the 841 model. I do understand that even with this dvd player that true HD performance in not possible...but I wanted something that would look better than the standard picture. I have the Samsung 5063W DLP and thought this dvd player would match it nicely. Is the DLP upconverting my regular DVD player that I am using now??
Does anyone know how long it will be until they start releasing HD dvds? I know it has been talked about but was curious if anyone knows when that will happen.
Here's another question for you all....I am thinking about going dish...and would like to know what the pros and cons are between Dish Network and DirecTV. Is there really any clear advantage from one over the other? (besides the NFL package DirecTV has) Would it be better to use HDMI for the DVD player or for the Dish connection?
Thanks for your time :smokin:
There are several HD-DVDs already available, however, they must be played on a computer (a relatively powerful computer) with an internet connection.
HD-DVD players are scheduled to be availble sometime in 2005, however, expect them to be very expensive.

No it's not. It upscales. It will not play HD-DVD or Blu-Ray when available.

Samsung should have updated their product info on this player, it makes people think they are buying and HD dvd player when all the player does is upconvert.

will HD-DVD Players be reverse compatable to be able to play our old fashioned 480 Videos also ?? :stuckthum
Blaster,
The HD-DVD (Toshiba and friends) will be backward compatibe. Blue Ray (Sony and friends) it seems will also be according to some reading I have done. More or less (more) up to the company using the Blue Ray technology to make the unit backward compatible.
There is a link with info here on the site somewhere courtesy of one of the members. Might try a search.
princevalium,
Love the user ID :)

Ok I get the point....it is basically an upconverter. :) I watch the Lord of the Rings with a regular dvd player now and it seems pretty good in picture and color..but I know it can be better. It is also connected via rca which doesn't help. At least the Samsung has a HDMI connection.
Lee,
Thanks...I like the user ID too

Matt27,
I think Samsung is pretty clear about the player's capabilities. IMO, many don't really "read". They just see HD and assume the rest.
Cut from Samsungs website:
Get an Even Clearer View
The 720p/1080i DVD Players greatly enhance video performance by increasing the video resolution of ordinary DVD titles and up-converting them to HDTV compliant formats. A normal DVD player outputs 480i (interlaced) video. Progressive Scan DVD players can roughly double that resolution by outputting 480p video. the HD players enable you to enjoy an HDTV compliant picture-roughly twice the resolution of progressive scan DVD players. It is not High Definition DVD, so it is not a new format and works with existing discs.
