Sony has 4 screen modes: Normal, Full, Zoom, Wide Zoom.
"Normal" is a 4:3 image (bars on left/right etc).
The other 3 screens are distortions (horizonal, vertical, etc.).
Is it simply impossible to watch a dvd on Sony without zooming? I want to watch a widescreen image without any silly distortions. I haven't tried any 1.78 DVDs yet, since they are hard to find (unless I want to watch Mean Girls or something, which I don't). I never had this problem with my 27 inch 4:3. If I played a widescreen on the 4:3 tv, then I would get bars but no distortion. On my new Sony, I get fat faces, etc.
Actually, come to think of it, I am wondering why I even have a widewscreen tv - I got black bars with the 4:3 anyway on widescreen movies. So I'm not really getting much more picture with the new widescreen hdtv, unless I watch a HD channel of course (which is awesome no doubt).
