So this lovely little set has only 2 Component inputs, and I'm (un)lucky enough to have an Xbox, DVD, and an HD Cable Box.

I've seen inexpensive cables that are Component on one end, and D-Sub VGA on the other. There's no conversion hardware or anything, its simple assume that the device at the other end can handle both types of signal.

Is the E44W46LCD working like this? I'd like to hookup my Xbox HD via the D-Sub connector WITHOUT buying one of those expensive Xbox VGA adapter boxes.

There are also component video switch boxes available.

Here's an inexpensive manual switch from Radio Shack that works.

Just don't mix up the colours.

There are also "automatic" component video switches from Audio Authority and others for more money...

If your A/V receiver is "older" and doesn't have component video switching, you could also consider upgrading that....

This TV has DVI, I believe. Get a Cable STB with DVI out?

Please put your location in your profile. It'll help us help you.

Interesting theory, I've seen those cables and thought they were for converting PC (d-sub) into component inputs. But I never thought of doing the reverse which is what I believe you're proposing.

I'm in NYC using Time Warner Cable (AKA Stupid-Dip****-Cable Company)

My Cable box is an Explorer 8000HD with the DVI port disabled. My AV Receiver is a inexpensive POS that I really don't want to upgrade. I'm also uncomfortable about passing the video signal through an intermediary before it hits my TV.

I've seen those Component->VGA converter boxes. There are a few nice ones "designed" to work with the XBOX (you can tell they are generic devices with black/green color scheme applied), such as the X2VGA and ZD-23. These run about $50-60USD and are reputed to be of poor manufacture, though they are supposed to be excellent when they are working. I'm just not comfortable buying them from the sleezy websites you see them advertised one.

The component->D-sub cables I'm interested in only run about $15USD. I've read that some people have gotten them to work with other TVs, but most of these posts were from European posters, and their multi-standard TVs are usually capable of all sorts of things ours (US) aren't.

are you sure your HD-stb DVI doesn't work (did you try) or did your
(AKA Stupid-Dip****-Cable Company) tell you that...
(to this day if I call Adelphia they say no and I've been using DVI for 6 mo)

if so , your gonna have to make a decision , no stb , don't want to switch receivers , no DVI for xbox AFAIK...

1 choice left- you didn't elaborate on your DVD Player
maybe you could/need to 'upgrade' that

if that is the case perhaps buy one that upconverts signals to 720p or 1080i
with DVI out (problem solved)

Blaster, the DVI port on the SA8000HDs is not active yet anywhere... It should be "soon".

DVI capable DVD player is certainly an option, though I did just purchase my current DVD player only 6mo ago and would hate to drop another $200 on this round of AV upgrades. Call me cheap, but I hate spending money on electronics whose value depreciates to 0 within months of purchase.

That Samsung DVD player does seem promising though. I've heard it has some problems?

I just went and found my Component to VGA cable to try it out for you but unfortunately my cable has bnc connectors on the component end and I don't have any bnc to rca adapters.

Sorry

Found my bnc connectors ... hooked up my xbox and a cd player via component into vga input on the tv and neither worked. I have the same setup you do and my stupid adelphia HD-DVR moxi box DVI out is disabled. There has to be a way!

I also had an DVD player, HD-receiver and XBOX but only 2 component inputs on my Panasonic Tau TV. Bought a JVC component video switcher box that worked great. It allowed 4 component inputs to be fed into one output. Cost was around 70 bucks from B&H photo online
