I recently bought a 30 inch Sony widescreen and am thinking of returning it for a 34 inch Sony widescreen. This is for my bedroom. 34 inch is $600 more. Worth it?

Do you find the 30" too small for your bedroom?
Is an extra $600 for 4" diagonally worth it to you?
$150 an inch...

nuczin2,
I say is the 600 bucks worth the 4inches or is it worth the second guessing? I bought a 30" too and for about a month I spent second guessing myself if I should have went with the 30", but in the end I figured it to be the best size for my bedroom(16x18). That being said though, I say if you have the money, go for it!!

I'd say it's not just 4" more, its a 66% increase in viewable screen. You would be going from ~295 sq in to ~491. A huge increase.

I have both size set, I would put a 30 inch tv in a bedroom, not a 34,(just too big).

I believe the 34in has appr 30% more viewing area than the 30. There is a thread somewhere to get the exact # of sq inches, I'll look for it.

I found it in HDTVfaqs by 57u

well its the widescreen vs 4x3 faq
30in = 383.67 in viewing area
34in = 494.32 in
28.8% more viewing area

That's $5.42 more per square inch....pretty cheap!
1.48 cents a day per square inch the first year, and free afterward

Trust me, HD really shines on bigger sets so i would say go with the 34"
about the HD being better on bigger sets? I have a 43" now and was thinking about getting a 26" for my room, is there really a point in a 26" HDTV, or is the quality diff really no big deal?

The only reason why HD doe'snt look as good on a smaller set as it does on a bigger set is because all that detail is compressed because of the smaller screen.
It looks good but not much better than dvd's, i would say the smaller the set the more it looks more like dvd, just a little better, not that wow factor that you get from a bigger set.

IMO... comparing direct view to direct view, I see no difference in HD 'picture quality' between a 30" and 38". Just a smaller/larger picture.

Update:
Today i finally got the HDTV set i wanted, the Sony 34" KV34HS420 from circuit city for $1409+ i got a gift card worth $100.It sucks though because i was planning on using the gift card today but the guy told me you had to wait 24 hours to use it.
I was planning on getting the set friday, but i heard on the weather station that it was going to down poor all day so i went and got the set today.Let me tell you this sucker is heavy, you will deffinately need 2 strong people or 3 guys to help you carry it.It took a lot of man power and a lot of blisters( ouch).
So far i just turned the set on to see if it worked ok and then did the choose language menu, then a channel search, since i don't have HD cable yet, but that is coming soon.
After completing the channel search there was a tilt option which i did'nt have to touch because the tv was'nt tilted it was just fine.Then i just turned the set off and unplugged it and put a sheet over it to keep dust off of it, and will hook up all the equipment to it tommorow.It was getting late so, plus i was exhausted and had a couple of blisters on my hands, so i'll just take a break and work on it tommorow.
If anybody is interested in the 34" version, just make sure you got a good sturdy stand that can take 200lbs, because that was the only hard part with this set the weight.
Also, Ratman i have a question on speaker wire for you. I am upgrading my speaker wire for my home theater and would like to know what is the recommended gauge size for home theater? Right now i'm just using the wires that came with the speaker set but they are starting to break on the edges from being taken out all the time.
It doe'snt have to be a fancy speaker wire brand, i know with speaker wire that it's the size Gauge that matters.I'll get back to you guys tommorow with my settup .
Later ,
Matt~
Here's the article on Speaker Wire. I usually recommend 12 gauge 2-conductor wire that you can buy at Home Depot or similar for about $25/100'.

Sounds good, thanksfor the info 57U i'll look probably tommorow since i'll be using my gift card, and home depot is right next to CC.Would 16 gauge be ok too?
Minimum I'd use is 14, no matter what the distance, but that's just me.

I beg to differ I just got a 30" Samsung HDTV and even with an upconverting DVD player, and HD channels are far superior than DVD. My DVDs look really good and i have a hard time tellin the difference between movies on DVD and HBOhd but once i flip to Discovery HD or any sports in HD its no contest on PQ. But i do believe there is more of a distinction between DVD PQ and HDTV PQ on larger TVs jus from the fact that DVD's are 480 and larger TVs need the higher resolution to look their best.

Bought the same Sony (KV34HS420). Wow! My God. The detail is incredible. Discovery HD theater will be my home until the baseball season arrives. (Comcast is broadcasting every Cubs/Sox game in Hi-Def next year.) Could not be happier with this set.

I'd pay $600 for 4 more inches Haha .. that sounded just wrong ... but hey, it's not the size, but how you use it, right? :)
I think the statements that HD is not that big an improvement on the smaller sets is not a knock on the HD picture but a comment on how good the smaller standard def sets can look, particulalry on dvds. On my 30" toshiba, HD is better picture than standard def, but it is not that much better IMO. On a big screen the difference is much more noticable, particulalry as you may actually be getting all the resolution your set claims to be able to show.

The 34" Sony weighs in excess of 200 lbs. If you get the HD model you will have a state of thew art picture
