I was told that if you have a STB without IEEE, you could still record a HiDef(1080i) signal on the JVC D-VHS by utilizing a HD S-Video cable from the STB S-Video out - to the JVC S-Video in?? Has anyone else heard this or tried this??
You cannot record an HD signal without the firewire connection. That is the only way.
The S-Video connection would allow you to record at S-VHS resolution, which is 400 lines, while HD is 720P or 1080i. (Standard VCRs record at 240 lines.)
See the third and fifth paragraphs in This Link (http://www.tvauthority.com/subpages/product.asp?dept=7&cat=&prod=324&aff=5119)
They do make mention of a picture format converter, which allows you to view HD on an SD TV (480i). Why anyone would spend $1k for a VCR and watch it on a $250 TV is beyond me.

I'm not sure my tv has a firewire connection. :(
Your TV doesn't need a firewire connection, only the recording device & the STB, if you're getting the signal from a STB. Your current SA3100HD doesn't have firewire out, but future STBs may (like the SA3250HD, but only if enabled by the cable company.
