Does anyone know if it's on the market yet? The Best Buy website has it listed as being on sale, but you can't buy it online yet. The nearest BB to me is over the border and 30 min away, so I was hoping that someone living a little closer had noticed it.

This one is of particular interest to me because it is cheap, has HDMI output and performs 1080i upscaling.

Sorry if this player has come up before, but my search yielded no results.

Here are the relevant links:

Thanks in advance.

Derek

Wow, does DVD audio and SACD audio too? Still, I for one thought the tuner feature was a excellant feature of their other player (though for a lot more dough). Also, I still am not sold on the utility of upconverting DVD players. My TV already upconverts ordinary DVD output, and so does yours.

Alot of dvd players show dvd audio and sacd compatibility, but any player will play them as well as hdcd. Im not going to explain it all caus i hate typing [lazy] you have to do your homework on these formats to get the true experience of this stuff.Example your player will say 5.1 dolby digital...but only if your reciever decodes it and u aint get'n through rca cables are you!! It will also say DTS but only if your reciever ....yada, yada, yada...Geting the picture? As far as the features, u might need a hdmi to dvi converter and a 27mhz/10 bit dac? kind of weak.I would let this thing sell for a couple months and see the reviews it gets. The samung upconverters are getting mixed reviews and the new one that was supposed to be out already has been delayed....HHHHMMMMM!!!.just do a little more homework before u jump in and spend your hard earned cash. hope this helps.

Only a DVD-A player can play a DVD-A disc.(DVD-A+ has not been released in the U.S.)
Hybid SACD's contain a 'stadard' PCM track that can be played on any player, but not all SACD's are hybrid.

In order to enjoy SACD or DVD-A (Hi-Resolution), you MUST use the analog multichannel outputs from the player and also have an A/V reveiver with corresponding inputs.

You cannot get 'hi-resolution' with digital coax or optical.

Rich:
I thought there might be some PQ to be gained by letting the Faroudja (sp?) chip in the player do the upscaling rather than chip in the TV? Perhaps not, but a lot of people were excited about the DVB318 model and this one appears similar except that it uses HDMI instead of DVI.

Starbuck and Ratman:
I don't believe this player does SACD, but they are advertising DVD-A and it does have discrete analog 5.1 outputs if that means anything.

Normally I sift through hours of reviews and user opinions before I buy something, but I'm afraid that my current DVD player is starting to go, so I may be forced into buying a replacement sooner than I'd like to. I wouldn't mind being a guinea pig for the DVB418, as it's the only cheap player that I've found with HDMI and 1080i. I'd just like to make sure its on the shelves before I make the trip.

I'm not sure why BB is only advertising the LG w/HDMI

Yesterday I bought a Toshiba SD-5970 w/HDMI for less than $180 after tax. I live in Sterling, VA.

Here's the jist of the specs from Tosh website:

msrp $249.99

HDMI Output

Video Upconversion 720p or 1080i

Component Video Output ColorStream Pro®

Progressive Scan 3:2 Pulldown Digital Cinema Progressive

Resolution 540 Lines

JPEG Viewer

Audio:

Audio D/A 24-bit/192kHz

Dolby® Digital/DTS® Compatible

WMA & MP3 Playback

Virtual Surround Sound

Extra:

Remote Control: Universal Remote w/ TV Controls

Terminals:

HDMI 1

Y/Pr/Pb 1 set

S-Video 1

RCA-Video 1

L-R Audio 1 pair

Optical Out 1

The hook up took a total of two minutes.
Step 1: set switch on front panel from "analog" to "HDMI"
Step 2: connect supplied HDMI cable to DVD HDMI out and TV HDMI in
Step 3: Turn on TV and DVD and go to specified input.

I guess it will come down to whichever has a better upscaler in it.

Actually, It will probably come down to the quality of your TV and how well it handles the DVD Video signal.

You might also want to find out if the LG comes with a HDMI cable.

If the Tosh didn't come with a 6' HDMI cable I wouldn't have bought it.

All things being equal (we won't know until they're reviewed), the quality of the upscaler will make the difference. From what I've gathered, the LG does not come with the freebee cable. However, I suspect that the price difference between the players may be due to the inclusion/exclusion of the Faroudja upscaler. My current player worked well last night after a cleaning, so I might be able to sit with it until some reviewers take a look at these two. We'll see.

I'm still not sure why BB is not advertising the SD5970
They are advertising the Same version in the DVD/VCR combo. Personally I don't own one VHS tape so I really didn't need spend 20 extra dollars so I could play tapes.

I don't know if people are still lurking this thread, but FWIW the LG unit in question has received lukewarm reviews thus far. The Toshiba has received some terrible ones, as well as some lukewarm, but it doesn't look like either player is a winner. It's looking like the Panasonic S97 or the new Sony are the ones to watch for.

In reference to the above thread, there was this review written on the lgdvb418 at http://www.keohi.com/keohihdtv/experttips/michaeltlv/lg_dv7832_review.html

This might be old news but maybe it maybe helpful.
