Anyone getting any good information on when this dvd player will be available. I keep getting the run around. Samsung told me last week it will be released in October but retailers are telling me mid November. Should I wait for this player or look for another dvi out player. suggestions?

It looks like possibly november, but there is no guarantee that you can use the DVI for upconversion or i think it's the component connection, not sure.
It's because of the firmware. But if this player fixes what was with the 841, then the 941 sounds like it'l be a good upconverting player, especialy if it has the faroudja chip in it.:)

Most upscaling DVD players will only perform that function via the DVI interface. There are a few exceptions.
Even the ones that were exceptions now have new firmware in the new builds that prevents upconversion on CV on about 1/2 of DVDs... You can never be certain that upconversion will occur using CV...

I believe the 941 will be HDMI, not DVI.

Doesn't matter... DVI and HDMI are the same spec for video.
And supposedly the unit comes packaged with an HDMI to DVI adapter.

On Amazon it says the Availability: Usually ships in 1-2 business days from J&R Music and Computer World. I think the reference to Dec 24th is the vendor general delivery guarantee by then on last minute orders. A Yahoo! search will also bring up other vendors. :sherlok:

Question
I have a SAMSUNG HDTV (1080i) that only has component inputs, how would you connect the HD941 to get 1080i ? because through the component cables I would only get 480p.

You have not options other than to look for a DVD player that will pass upscaled signals via component.

I have the same issue, all I have is 2 component imputs, but i do have hd digital cable, what if i run the DVI from the back of the dvd player into the back of the DVI in the cable box will that work for a dvi imput and that runs out from the hdcable into my 1080I components, or will that still not work? Because if so im definatly grabbing on of these bad boys! :D

Are you really sure your cable box has a DVI "input"?
Generally, there are only "outputs".
I don't believe your 'solution' work.

Anyone getting any good information on when this dvd player will be available?
I've been waiting for an upconversion DVD player like the HD941 that has HDMI output, Faroudja DCDi technology and DVD-Audio playback.
Unfortunately, as of today November 28, 2004, the Amazon website says, "This item is not stocked or has been discontinued."
Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001H4BZC/qid=1101656102/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1_etk-electronics/002-2368982-0229639?v=glance&s=electronics&n=172282
Also, the last reviewer on the Amazon site (Stephen) says he contacted Samsung who adivsed him that Samsung is having production problems with the HDMI output. He also said that online stores have stopped accepting pre-orders and Samsungusa.com no longer lists the DVD-HD941 under its current "high definition" DVD players. Rather, it can now be found only under the category "Archived DVD" players. I haven't checked with Samsung, but it appears that it may have pulled the plug on this model.
We may have to find another reasonably priced DVD player with all these features in this price range.

I'm gonna buy this one been waitng for a while on it. But i've got a question, 768p???. Anyone else notice that? Look here http://www.abtelectronics.com/scripts/site/site_product.php3?id=16901 When did this come about? I havnt even seen a t.v./monitor that supports that.Wouldnt our sets have to support that? Can anyone explain please?
Most LCDs and most plasmas are actually 768P native displays. Do a search and you'll find lots. The recent Sony LCD-based RPTVs are 788P.

Flafos, December 1st is almost here... bet you are excited about getting your new DVD-HD941 player. Be sure and post a review of it once you have a chance to test it out.
I just checked the Samsung USA website (Nov. 29th) and the DVD-HD941 is back on the Hi-Def Conversion DVD Player page:
http://www.samsungusa.com/cgi-bin/nabc/product/b2c_product_detail.jsp?eUser=&prod_id=DVD-HD941%2fXAA
However, if you go to their Hi-Def Conversion DVD Player Products page, You will notice the HD-841 has an orange colored link below it that says, "Buy from online retailer" which the HD-941 does not have, so that would seem to indicate they are still not up to normal delivery and shipping capacity:
http://www.samsungusa.com/cgi-bin/nabc/product/b2c_product_subtype.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0741041754.1101755936@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccccadddekgklimcfejceefdfggdhgn.0&eUser=&prod_path=%2FAudio+and+Video%2FDVD+Player%2FHi-Def+Conversion+DVD+Players&queryString=&la=en&srchType=ce
Hope the brick-and-mortar stores get it in soon... till then, will wait and see what kind of buying experience Flafos has with ABT Electronics.

Well I have the HD941 and here is what I have to say about it. I see a noticable improvement in picture quality. Last night we watched Spiderman2 on the HD841 and tonight I decided to compare it on the HD941. The picture is a little more crisp. The color is dead on as well. I am watching in 768p right now. I have yet to try any other setting. There are some other improvments as well. When you connect the HDMI it automatically uses that output. No more connection headache. As I said earlier it has 768p now. It also has the black adjustment. Included are 1 HDMI/HDMI cable and 1 HDMI/DVI cable. I do not like the display (it is too bright for my taste), but With this kind of picture I really don't care. I will keep you informed to any new observations.

I'M buying this after i recover from christmas.I'm curious if youve used the SACD or DVD Audio yet. It's supposed to support both but, alot of players say that cause the hybrid sacd, and any dvd audio will play on any player and some throw that compatibility thing in there. There not lying, there just not telling you everything.[SCAM]!!!!Just curious if you tried it yet?

Flafos, thanks for your first review of the Samsung HD941. Have you done any more picture tests with it... any more feedback?
Sonyhdguy also reviewed it in another thread: (http://www.hdtvoice.com/voice/showthread.php?t=13998)
He said, "I found the black levels to be so dark that some scenes were unwatchable." and went on to say that, "the display options have a black correction, but that's only for component out... The blacks looked significantly better when I was viewing 720p and 1080i through my component input."
Have you found also found the black levels to be too dark on your TV?
Have you had a chance to try any resolutions other than 768p?
Sonyhdguy did say that the HDMI picture quality is about 90% of HDTV, which sounds very promising!

DVDUDE,
I have found the same thing to be true with the black level. I tried adjusting the brightness when watching a dark movie and this seems to help. I have not tried the other resolutions as of yet. I have been too busy to play around with it. I probably won't even try the component out because it would be a real pain to try and hook up. The picture quality is at least 90% of HD. I am very pleased with the picture quality. The black issue does not bother me too much. I will post more over the coming weeks.

I checked the SAMSUNG website and "Stephen" is now wrong because as of tonight the HD941 is NOT listed under the archived section. It appears to be a current HD Dvd player. Samsung only currently makes two models of HD DVD's and that's the HD841 and the HD941.
Can't wait to buy this and try it out.
