Hi all. Thanks for all the great info posted in these forums. Obviously I'm a newbie here and I could use a little clarification/education in the world of digital video signals.

I just picked up a Mits WS 55513 HDTV from Sears on the cheap - my first venture into projection, widescreen and HDTV all in one step. Naturally, I need a new DVD player worthy of the new HD set. After reading the Tosh SD-5970 post and doing some further research I'm thouroughly confused about connectivity - specifically what type of outputs I should look for in a DVD player and what type of inputs I inherited once I bought the Mits.

Most of my confusion is with DVI/HDMI. Now, I could just go with component since I hear the DVI doesn't make that big a difference w/ a CRT based set, but flaunt if it ya got it, right. The problem is I don't know if I got it. The mits has one DVI input, but I don't understand if that's the same as HDMI, or if they are compatible, or if I'll have to spend half as much on a cable/converter as I do on the player, etc, etc. The audio will be going to my AVR via coax or optical so I don't need that portion of the HDMI signal anyway. I just need to know if I can plug an HDMI output DVD player into my HDTV's DVI input. And how much it will cost to get from the player to the set.

Perhaps the question I should have asked first is: Since I'm upgrading the DVD player is it worth it to go for a player that will upconvert to 1080i? I understand some of the players 'hard wire' the upconverted format so you can't always adjust it to your liking. Is this increased PQ worth the $$ and inflexible formats?

The price is right on the Tosh, so I'm thinking about picking one up. Any comments would be GREATLY appreciated.

HDMI is basically DVI plus audio. They are compatible from a video standpoint.

Read the FAQs on "DVI Connectors" and "Cables and Connections." to start. Also look at "What you need to do to your new HDTV."

Those upconverting players are nice, but you would likely see a bigger benefit on LCD and plasma.Although it does help with big tv's, it helps sharpen the image a little since bigger screens crave high resolution.

I was thinking of getting one, but after hearing about the new HD dvd players, i think i'll just wait and see, i heard they may even have a upconverting chip built in.

If your interested in the upconverting player then try it out, and first make sure the place you buy it from has a good return policy like circuit city, bestbuy, sears etc.Incase you don't like it. It may help though, give it a try.In fact i may try one for my self this week

I was going to wait for a HD dvd player but decided not to. They will be $$$ when they first come out and like any other electronic device - will probably have bugs. Plus it could be a very long time until they hit the market (well - a long time in my eyes :) ). The upconverting ones aren't that much and to me - made a big difference.

Like Matt said - find a place with a good return policy. And then try a few out.

I personally hope that Blu-Ray will kill HD DVD

Thanks all for feedback. I'll have to check out some of the local stores that will allow me to return.

Thanks also for the cable link - that clears up a lot for me, but I also noticed those cables (DVI/HDMI) can vary in price quite significantly for essentially the same thing. It's a digital signal, so either it's there or it's not, right?

Just for comparison sake to the 1910, does anyone have any recommendations on a progressive scan player with the Faroudja (sp?)chipset? It sounds like those may suit me just as well since I don't have a plasma/lcd tv. Just trying to research makes/models with the Faroudja to see if there's much price difference from the denon 1910.

Thanks again.
