Well Sony's version of the upscaling dvd player has finally hit the shelves. Has any one seen it in action yet? I'm hoping it will match well with their own HDTV sets.

I know Crutchfield has it but I went to the local shops and not yet. I want to buy it locally so hopefully I have it in a few weeks. :sherlok:

I am seriously thinking about getting this DVD player now that I bought the KD-34XBR960.

Has anyone seen the benefits of upscaling?

I've seen it at the Sony Store (but not hooked up to a hdtv). It will propably be a few weeks before it is available at the big box stores.

it does not come with an hdmi cable.. i ordered one on ebay for 25 bux...
sony uses their own deinterlacing engine...(Precision Cinema Progressive de-interlacer with 3-2 pulldown processing )

ToXicChiLL, since your first off the mark with the new dvd player, can you let me know what type of tv you have, what was your previous dvd player, and what makes the picture look great compared to your old player?

i have a panny 42in plasma.. (TH-42PX25U/P).. my old dvd player - it's an akai - region free progressive scan player.. that is connected through component (monster thx series).. i was watching pirates of the carribeans, and there was a scene where they're under the cabin of their ship.. and maybe it's just my novice eyes, but the sony is a bit clearer and i can make a bit more detail out.. not a lot, but enough for me to see...

BTW - To anybody who cares, these are now available at Frys, or at least the one in Austin :) $300 - happy hunting!

BTW: There's a review of this player on CNET. They say if you have a CRT RPTV, you probably won't notice a difference with the upconversion, so I think I may pass for this one and go for the NS775 instead.

I'm excited to see this one. Preliminary reports suggest is suffers from "green depression", but it's only real competition at this price point (Panasonic S97) suffers from macroblocking. Wonder which of the problems is least apparent on an RPTV. Thoughts?

What is "green depression", besides the lack of $?

It's not my term, I read it in a review.....it means that green isn't quite green enough, if that makes any sense. He went on to say that it sometimes made faces look jaundiced as a result. I'd still like to try it with my TV to see if it's an issue for me.

Compared this Sony DVPNS975P ($239 "open box" at GG) to Toshiba SD5970 ($170 at BB), both with HDMI up-converting. The Sony PQ was noticeably better on my Pioneer 50" plasma. Also, DVDs appeared "stretched" with the Toshiba, in 720p & 1080i, but not w/ the Sony. IMO, well worth the extra $100+ (when add cost of HDMI cable, which is included w/ Toshiba) for the Sony. To me, PQ seemed better than w/ a regular prog scan DVD player via component video on my TV, so also worth the extra $$.

Since i have recently purchased a Mitsubishi 55" RPTV and upgrading my receiver my next step is to upgrade my current DVD Player to either a progressive scan or upconverting DVD player since my current on displays in 480i. I have read a lot of the posts about the upconverting players and can not decide on what i should do. I saw the new Sony DVPNS975V and have been seriously thinking of getting one. But I would need a 12' HDMI cable which are high dollar. Should i get the new sony, get a regular sony progressive scan and wait for the HD DVD players? What would i be looking at cost wise for a 12' HDMI cable? What are the HD DVD players going to cost when they become available?

Probably around $300 or less, once the format wars ends.Upconverting players are nice but you will only see the better picture with a plasma or LCD set.

You may or may not see any picture improvement at all with the upconverting player compared to the regular progressive scan players.

Buy one from a place with a good return policy then give it a go, and tell me how it looks.

CLW2112: From what I read too, you'll probably only notice improvement w/ an upconverting DVD player if your TV is a fixed-pixel TV (that is LCD or plasma). As stated above, do as I did and buy them from somewhere without restocking fees for returned items (e.g. BB, GG, CC, Costco) and give them a test drive (noted, that it's probably more difficult if you'd have to buy online). I purchased my 6' HDMI cable on ebay for $22 (w/ shipping incl); forget about the $100-150 ones they sell at the chain stores.

At first, I too was a little hesitant about spending the extra $100-200 for an upconverting player (but I really needed a new player, since my old one wasn't even prog scan). To me, it seemed like forcing a lower quality image to look high quality. But after trying out 3 different types of players, was convinced it was worth it for now (even my non-techie wife noticed the PQ improvement). Yes, a hassle to buy & return, but part of the fun for me. The main thing is to try some of your favorite DVDs and see if you notice a difference. If not, stick with a good prog scan player and use that extra $$ to buy some DVDs, or a year of Netflix, or to buy an HD DVD player in the future (whenever that will be).

BTW, the 12/04 issue of Consumer Reports on DVD players is a useless article.

I have to agree with Jamsession. In reference to his link, I purchased the Sony DVPNS97V unit last week. Picture seemed very nice, IMO, slightly better than the Samsungs HD941... However, before I could finish watching a movie, the unit automatically shut off. Thought it might have just been a fluke. After finishing watching 1 movie, I wasn't able to eject the disc. It stated "LOCKED" or something to that effect. Went through the manual, said if you receive such message, contact your authorized sony dealer. After unplugging the unit, and plugging it back in, I was able to eject the DVD out, but was not able to play another movie... It just died... I thought this unit would compliment my newly purchased Sony TV, but there does seem to be problems in their production line, at least for this player, since I have read similar problems about this unit... I returned the item the next day and received a full refund from PC Richard & Son. Make sure if you do purchase this unit, you have 30 days trial and that you are able to get a refund if your unit stops working; going through the manufacturers 1 year warranty is usually a big hassle. Anyway, good luck to all in your search for an upscaling dvd player...

I have a couple year old DVPsomething775 that was a great player to my eyes, but it died (started skipping, not IDing some DVD's and cleaning only helped for a short time) I think I paid $300 for it when I bought it. It replaced a cheapie that my daughter is still using. My father in law had a high dollar ES DVD player which died in a similar timeframe as mine. SO it got me to thinking, maybe their higher end stuff (if you can call it that) is planned obsolete, or just they cut corners to make higher quality pieces affordable. I dont know which, but I bought a Denon DVD2900 to replace the Sony and the Denon has a noticibly better picture. I dont think I'll be buying Sony in the future because of the lack of product longevity. I have an Older Panny DVD-A300U that is probably going on 10 years old, and after a repair for a known diode switching problem in the transport, has worked flawlessly. I refuse to buy a Panny however, due to the fact they did NOT cover that repair under warranty when the player was like 12months and 3 days old, and the problem was a KNOWN issue. Guess I'll be working my way around the brands....
