I have done numerous searches on this site for more information on progressive scan dvd players but for some reason all I come up with is discussions regrading different models and makes. Maybe I am not searching right but what I am trying to find out is if progressive scan dvd players increase the resolution (for lack of a better word) to 1080i or 480p? If the answer is 480p what is the advantage over a regular dvd player that displays 480i other than the relative smoothness of picture? Thank you in advance to those who reply.

At least for the present, all DVDs are 480i.

A progressive scan DVD player will de-interlace the 480i to 480p. It takes at least an ED (enhanced definition) TV to display 480p. And yes it is a better picture, subject to some discussion.

Up converting DVD players can output 480p, 720p and 1080i. But you are still starting with a source at 480i.

Here's some interesting reading on Progressive Scan (http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_7_4/dvd-benchmark-part-5-progressive-10-2000.html), gets a lot more technical.
