Q: Is it better to leave the tv on for a short period of time when not viewing rather than stress the tv and bulb and turn it off and back on? I wonder what the breaking point is, time-wise...30 min? 10 min? 1 hour? 3 hours?

Turning a TV on and off many times, does tend to "stress" some components. Even though it saves energy, which I'm all for, I would say that you should probably not turn your TV on and off 5-10 times a day. Let's say 1-3, 4 times is OK. However that works for you.

There are no "rules" about this...these are just guidelines.

I've been thinking about this a bit more over the past couple of days. I'm not sure which would "stress" the bulb on LCDs/DLPs more - leaving them on an extra hour a day, or turning them on/off a couple of times. My guess would be the latter would cause more stress and that may be why some people have bulbs burn out in a "shorter time".

Same for light bulbs in the house. If you have incandescent light bulbs in the house, the best way to make them last a long time is to have them on a dimmer that "ramps up" the power. This means they don't get "shocked" when turned on and the dimmer means that the bulb will not be running at 100% power all the time either. Many of the bulbs in my house have been operating for over 14 years...

My Panasonic takes about 30 seconds to Kick on so to speak. Is this "ramping up" what the unit is perhaps doing already? I do notice that if the unit was just turned off and a cool down period has passed and I try to turn it back on it seems to take twice as long for the unit to come back on. Whereas if the cooling period has not passed it comes back on right away.
