View Full Version : Trouble with XBOX and Sony 30HS420
Just got a SONY KV30HS420 TV a week ago, and am having big trouble setting it up with my XBOX.
Bought the Microsoft Hi Def AV PAck and connected the Y, Pb, Pr cables into video input 6 on the back of the TV.
Then I go to the Xbox dashboard and toggle 480p, 720p and 1080i support to YES.
Then I put in a game...I have tried Halo 2, DOA, Panzer Dragoon, Fable and Xmen...and all i get is a messed up screen. The screen is very dark (dark blue or dark green, depending on the game) and blurry. Every once and awhile there are blooms of reddish colors. There seems to be an absence of the color white. Completely unusable.
Without changing a thing, except going into the Xbox dashboard...and toggling 480p and 720p support to NO.
Then the games work fine, everything normal, but of course this means the games are running in 480i.
Anybody know what is going on???
Help would be greatly appreciated.

Just did a search on google for your model number. Looking at the features on one of the sites that sell it, it indicates that the set is a Hi Scan 1080i display. I dont believe it supports 480P or 720P. Plus as you say above PB&J you toggle 480P & 720P to no but not 1080i. See if you can rent a game that is 1080i if not one of the ones you have already and see what happens.

Set the BOX TO 480P AND 10801, The TV will not accept 720p but will the other 2. If you still have problems, swap inputs of the TV.

PB&J ,
not sure, but didn't read that you set your xbox control panel to "widescreen" YES
I have all three on (480/720/1080) and it works great for me (and my set doesn't do 720)
sounds like a bad cable set (or connector) but if you say your getting good 480i, must not be
try each one: 1080 on, other two off, and so on...
also like kev said, plug xbox Y,Pb,Pr into video 7
I'm sure it will work, just need to figure out your combination... :smokin:
Widescreen mode is indeed set to YES.
Thanks Blaster.
I needed someone to confirm that the TV actually would take 480P like it was advertised to. And since you have all three (480, 720, and 1080) set to yes on your Xbox and it works... means I have a definite problem. Could it be my ancient Xbox?
I will pick up another set of cables today just to check that angle and report back.
thanks to everyone for the info.

And it still will not display a 720p game-like T.H.U.G, You will need to disbale 720p in the Dashboard when the time comes.

see that confuses me  (but mine works as is ?, till the time comes)
my thoughts were if a game comes along (720), and I put it in,
xbox will read 720, yes, send it to tv, then tv converts it to 1080
(if i dont choose 720 wont it just read it as 480i ?)
thats why i choose all 3 (my thinking, so coversion will take place)
am i just way off base thinking this...?

so as the story goes , mine works now, but i don't believe i have any 720 games, so maybe my time WILL COME :mecry:

This is more than likely a MOOT point since so few HD games are available let alone played. IMO this HD thing for Xbox is kind of useless. The HD games look only as good as the graphic artists/ CG artists draw the picture. Can anyone really see that mcuh of a difference with a video game?
My experience with a few 1080i games-ie Matrix, is that there is no real PQ jump compared to a 480p like Fuzion Frenzy/ JetSet Radio.

rent/borrow MX Unleashed
even tho I don't think it is 'drawn' very well, it is the one game on my system that stands alone, above all others...
on the flip-side, games like "morrowind" and "crimson skies" drawn superbly, but only so so because of 480...
:)
OK...Tried the Monster version of the component cables and the 480p mode still does not work.
Does anyone know if this TV even accepts 480p??? The back input on it claims to take 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i.
But again, using the Xbox dashboard... if I turn off the 480p mode and leave on the 1080i mode...all the games work fine. But when I turn on 480p mode...it is game over.

I'm 100% sure it does support 480p, otherwise it would'nt be an HDTV if it did'nt support 480p,1080i or 720p.
I have the 34" version and have no problems with it.
The problem could be your xbox and not your tv.When was your tv manufactured what month? And where did it get manufactured in?
Mine was manufactured in Tokyo,Japan, and has a build date of Sept 2004

Have you tried using a different source of 480p like a dvd player? That would let you know if it's the TV or the XBOX. Just a thought.
My DVD player isn't 480P. But now that I have this TV and the fact that DVD players sell for peanuts. Maybe it isn't a bad idea to pick one up tonight and check that out. If the DVD player doesn't work in progressive either, then the TV is going out the window. :)
I tried a friends Xbox set on 480P and same terrible picture results. Then I called Sony and the rep on the phone said that the TV does not support 480P...but that does not seem right at all. You can't really trust those company reps.
The only thing left to do is get a progressive DVD player and try that.
Do progressive DVD players have a similiar sort of toggle like an XBox where you can turn 480p on or off ?

Yup!......
Do progressive DVD players have a similiar sort of toggle like an XBox where you can turn 480p on or off ?Some have a hard switch, some have a menu item, some have both.

Are you sure your set is a Sony 30hs420 model? is it even HD or widescreen?
I'm confused, because if it is the hs420 it should have 480p,1080i,720p,480i.
If it's not the xbox causing the problems then it simply is a problem with your tv set.
Sony's stand by their tv's and are proud of their craftsmanship. In Japan TV manufacturer workers take great honor in their work,if they do bad they dishonor their company.
But on the rare occasion, their are lemons too that pass the QC and then when they are running a bit something goes in the set.

The DVD player will be the definitive test, Matt27-san.

Arigoto Ratman-san:)
I am so sure this TV is a Sony WIDESCREEN kv30hs420; and yes it has two inputs on the back that accept 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i.
That is why I am miffed city.
Ratman-san is san serif correct that I'll have to bring a DVD player to the party for the definitive test.
I'm off to Circuit City for the final answer.
Brought home a Sony DVD player with a progressive / interlace switch...No big surprise...with the DVD player set to progressive, the picture almost becomes a reverse color negative...no white in the picture, very dark and blurry with jaggies. Hey ho, the TV has got to go.
Thanks to everyone who offered advice.

siyanara, we await your conclusion,hahahahah.
Going to Circuit City tonight and forcing them to plug a progressive DVD player into their floor model...just so I can visually see that it works before I go through all the hassle of returning the TV.

ok, well i own the 30hs420 and i feed it coxhd via scientific atlanta 3250 and i also have connections for xbox/ps2 and a progressive scan dvd player connected. i use the pass through feature on my cable box and it accepts 720p (probably converts to 1080i) and my dvd's and 480p ps2&xbox games work flawlessly.
i think you must have gotten a bunk unit.
I used to have an older 32" vega(not hd) cant remember the model but it was the first yr vega. I had an older dvd player (sony) w/ component video. it worked great. then when i bought a new dvd player later...it wouldnt work with my older tv, reconnect my old player works fine, disconnect and i'd get all the squiggly lines and what not. and the dvd player was set to interlaced. i dont know if they changed the components or what i just thought it was weird.
It was indeed a BUNK UNIT. Circuit City and I finally found a time where they could come and do the swap. Before they left, I tested the new tv and it works just fine...playing Dragon's Lair in 1080i, XMEN Legends in 720p and Halo 2 in 480p.
So regardless of what Sony reps say when they took my calls on this unit, It does support progressive modes.
Yipee.

I'm a newbie/TV moron(not watching it...just knowing technology); are you switching modes (1081i, 720p, 480p) because those are optimal for each game, or just testing to see which modes are valid for your TV?
BTW is X-men legends a good game?

I think I answered my own question, but my new question is where are you finding the optimal setting for each game?

I had a similar problem... it was the the component cable that came with the HD kit. Go buy a cheap set of Acoustic Research Component cables and use them with the HD kit.... that should fix it!

Yes X-Men legends is an AWESOME game :)
Not exactly what I would use to show off the TV, (graphic wise) but yes it is very fun!

go to the menu choose which inputs you will be using and make sure you are plugged into the right set of inputs
