I am connecting a Sony DVP-NS700P (Chroma bug and all) to my new Sony KD-34XBR960. It seems to me that despite the fact the TV "accepts" 480p and that the DVD player output can be set to 480p, in my case I should set the output to 480i given the display on the XBR960 is 1080i native. I assume there would be less monkeying with the signal that way, or is there some potential benefit to letting the XBR do the conversion? Is this one of those things you try both ways to judge for yourself?

In addition, the DVP-NS700P has a 3 position switch on the rear panel labeled Video Out Scan Select with the choices being progressive, interlace, and selectable. It also has the ability to choose progressive or interlace in the setup menu. As is the case with Sony manuals in general, it tell you how to change it, but not why, when, or to what benefit. When I contacted Sony, the rep was no help at all. Other than to prevent you from being able to change the scan rate in the menu, why would Sony offer this?

BTW-is BNR on the DVD player (Block Noise Reduction) one of those useless features that is better turned off like most of the others on my XBR960?

I don't know about the BNR or the switc on the tv, but try 480i and 480p mode on the DVD player to see which is better. It really depends on whether or not the deinterlacer is better on the TV or DVD player. Probably the DVD player will do a better job (presumably it's dealing with the digital signal as opposed to a signal that's been converted several times).

In order to upscale (interpolate) the image to 1080i, I believe that the TV will take an interlaced image, deinterlace it, upscale it to 1080p and then interlace it. If you feed it a deinterlaced signal, you would skip step 1.
