I had bought the Hitachi first and while I loved the looks of it on the Hitachi stand, there were some issues with it.
The biggest was vertical banding that was quite evident on a light blue background. There was a thread on another forum that one guy went through 3 of them from a retailer. Mine did the same as well I noted the same in all the stores too.
The other thing I noticed was green and red hues on a lightly colored screen.
I returned it for the Sony 42" and I am so far really enjoying it. Side by side I found the Sony had brighter colors and a slight sharper image. Of course that is a very subjective matter. All in all, my family prerfers the Sony too. A&B Sound had them side by side, and that clenched it for me.

I have the sony. Very happy with it so far. (bought it in October)
