View Full Version : "Knowledgeable" salesman HATES Sony LCD

After being impressed with the picture of Sony's LCD system in both the XS and XRB series, I stop by a respected, Seattle-based chain and mention to an authoritative salesman that I'm thinking of this model for my home.

He proceeded to rip both Sony and the company's dedication to LCD, saying that they're both stubborn and arrogant, insisting on outdated technology because they refuse to buy DLP chips from someone else. He then proceeded to steer me toward his Mitsubishi line.

Perhaps when you're determined to look for it, the 'screen door' is more noticeable on the Sony's but I found the picture bright, sharp and viewable from both high and wide angles... all factors important to me.

So my question is: does this guy have a point... by looking at Sony, am I living in the past? Who bought a Sony and is NOT happy with it?

Thanks and happy viewing.

Bottom line, if YOU like it (since you will be the one paying for/watching the thing) go for it! I say buy Toshiba but not if that is not what you want.

Salespeople only know to sell, supposedly unbiased. I NEVER listen to a salesperson.

Who bought a Sony and is NOT happy with it?.

Only the ones that had problems and/or poor service. :D

Obviously Sony does't buy DLP chips from anyone because they don't make a DLP TV, but what does that have to do with their LCD TVs.....nothing. The salesperson I guess just prefers DLP. Both technologies have their advantages, just go with the TV that looks best to you and has the features you want. I bought a SONY LCD over a DLP because I thought it looked good and I could get a good deal on it at the time. The vertical and horizontal viewing angles are great, as that was a factor for me also.

I hate biased salespeople. It makes them look like even bigger idiots than they already are. LCD has screendoor effects, DLP has rainbow effects. Both are better than the old CRT RP's are. Tell that salesguy (making commission) to get over himself. One is NOT better than the other ... they are just different technologies.

Just to clear things up your talkin about a LCD Projection Tv right. An LCD TV is quite more expensive. I don't know why you'd be comparing DLP'd and LCD's when LCD is way better, but also like 2-3 times more expensive. I've had a Sony CRT and have a Sony Plasma and I think that they are great. I do find that there are alot of people out there who are biased againt Sony. As far as service I bought my plasma at the Sony store and the service was great. My Plasma broke after a day or 2 they had a salesmen and serviceman at my house within 3 days. I live an hour and a half away. Within a week I had a new TV and more "We're sorries" then I've every seen a salesperson give out.

Buy what looks best to you. The Mitsu cost quite a bit more......so he probably makes more money by selling it :rmoon2: I looked at both sets before I bought the Sony KDF-60XS955. Sony is always cutting edge technology. I hated the shiny glare screen on the Mitsu. I have read about people taking it off :( but for the money they want for the set.......I do not want to be altering the set and risk voiding the warranty. I do see a "screen door"........but it is only really noticable in really dark scenes. It is a "fixed pixel" set so you kinda gotta expect it. This really is not a problem at all for me once you get used to it. Every technology has it's trade offs of good and bad. I love my Sony.....and am very happy with my purchase. All my friends are quite envious of the picture quality, set size, and features that my LCD has to offer. Good luck with what ever you decide.

Actually, if I were looking to buy a TV today I would try to find out which brands have the best service record. I think 57U might be able to help with a list. I know I have seen a list somewhere. If I recall correctly, Hitachi had the best record and the Mits and Sony came in just about last. I could be wrong so verify my statement first. No bashing of brands here intended.

IIRC it's quite the opposite... :)

This is laughable...speaking of stubborn and arrogant, Mitsubishi only just realized that 720p is a HD format. So how long before they realize that customers and would-be customers have been *****ing about their mirror-like "anti-glare" screens for almost a decade, if not longer?
The salesman you talked to is the one living in the past, or a bubble perhaps.
Don't give him your business IMO...

(From the FAQ section):

Sony - 9%
Hitachi - 10%
Mits - 11% (not available in Canada)
Toshiba - 12%
Phillips - 14%
RCA - 20% (that's one in 5)

So sony's have the least repair rate of all the different manufacturers :)

RCA (20%) 1 in 5 repairs ... that's why Wal-mart sells them ... crap products.

deckard I don't understand when you say its quite the opposite. A Sony LCD 42 inch is
$13, 999 +tax Cdn. and a 70 inch Sony LCD projection is $9,999 +tax.

As far as service is concerned if you buy Sony from the Sony Store they will take good care of you.

talon1189 you do NOT have an LCD TV. You have an LCD Projection TV. I just checked the Sony USA & Sony Canada websites and KDF-60XS955 is an LCD Projection TV. Sony LCD's only go up to 42 inchs. Get your **** straight.

RIGHT you are you sneaky lil worder you, I even read it 3 times before I posted  I always try to call them LCD flat-panel TV. Pardon my ignorance I'll go back into my hole now...

EDIT: I wrongly ASSuMEd your whole post was stating that LCD RP is more expensive than DLP...oops

deackard I find when people compare DLP's and LCD Projection TV's they almost always just call them LCD's, that is why I asked to clear things up. By the way deckard my last post with the more "angry tone" was not directed at you, just to let you know!!

I'm pretty sure everyone here knew that we were talking about Rear-Projection TVs. DLP only comes in a Rear-Projection TV, so naturally you would compare DLP to LCD Rear-Projection. Anyway, my Sony KDF-50WE655 not only looks better than my friend's 52" Mitsu DLP, I got it for almost $1,000 less!!! When I say, "looks better" I mean the picture is clearer, brighter, shows better natural color, and doesn't have the rainbow bubble effect that the Mitsu DLP does. Both of our sets have been configured using the Avia DVD and my Sony is just better. Get the Sony, you won't be disappointed!!!

Still though LCD usually means Flat-panel display.

Just thought I'd throw in the "burn-in" resistance that the LCD's have over other displays. Could be the tie breaker for a gamer, someone who watches "ticker" channels, or someone who watches a lot of SD in 4:3 mode.

sto22 i'm a gamer and I have a Plasma (the easiest to get burn in) and I've never had a problem. Sony Plasma's are pretty resistent to burn in. Also responsible use helps.

Back to the original question I saw a Sony LCD Projection the other day at Futureshop playing Shrek 2 and it looked pretty damn good. If you are worried about service just buy from the Sony Store. I've never been disapointed with a Sony or the Sony Store.

Back to the main point which is that neither technology, DLP or LCD RP, is definitely better than the other. If someone says that one is way better, then they have a biased opinion. Use your own judgement and compare the two and get whichever one looks best and would work best for you.
