Just picked up my Samsung 50" DLP and getting things set up. Last night I educated myself on DVD Players. Need a new one since my APEX 600 died.

I'm down to the Denon 1910 and the Denon 2910.

Does anyone know if the 1910 plays SVCDs? vcdhelp.com states that the 2910 does. It does not state one way or the other on the 1910.

Has anyone seen the 1910 and 2910 side by side? Impressions?

I read the reviews on the 3910 and it seems outstanding, I understand that the 2910 uses the same decoder chipset and possibly has a common motherboard as well.

How bad are the dark background artifacts ... "macroblocking" on the 1910? Is is really worth the extra $300 to get the 2310 chipset in the 2910?

Thanks in advance.

Take a look at the new panasonic s97. It uses the 2310 chipset.

The 1910 does not play VCD's. I have not experienced much macroblocking on my 1910.

Actually it does ... just brought a 1910 home and it plays SVCDs with no problem. Located a local Denon dealer via the (Denon website (http://www.usa.denon.com) ) called and was suprised to find a small A/V store like them to have Sunday hours. They deal in Mitsubishi, Marantz and Denon - the sales clerk knew enough to be dangerous. Watched a bit of Star Wars Episode II, poped in Finding Nemo, watched some scrolling credits and last but not least tried my Finding Nemo SVCD.

Earlier today we had our older Sony combination DVD/VCR a SLV-D100 connected to the new Samsung HLP5063W and the PQ was good but not stellar with the Finding Nemo DVD. With the SVCD on the 50" screen the PQ was extremely bad. Many artifacts, jagged edges - looked like extremely poor processing. My wife, ever the pessimist, wasn't buying into the idea that a different player was going to make a real difference in either DVD or SVCD PQ, frankly I didn't think a different player would make any real difference on an SVCD.

Got the new unit home and connected up with a DVI cable, the price tag on the cable ($80US) was a bit of an ouch but it was late on a Sunday and I was determined to demo the unit tonight. Although the 1910 is extremely light and very small the PQ is nothing short of awesome! I dropped in Finding Nemo and switched the DVI upscaling over to 720P and WOW, That's What I'm Talking About! My wife was very suprised and it really made quite the difference on the SVCDs as well.

I haven't recieved my copy of DVE yet, but when I do I'll get everything calibrated in and check to see the extent of the macroblocking - from what I've seen sofar I'm willing to put up with tuning my contrast and color control to minimize the visual effects.

Re-read what I posted - VCD's. Not SVCD.

I tried a VCD last night and it said it was an unknown format. I'll have to test a SVCD.

Edit - and I love my 1910 :D
