Not to be a pain - but have you looked at the Denon 1910? I have this player and love it. It is cheaper than the sony and I *think* it is a hair cheaper than the panny. Plus it has gotten great reviews from top testers. Just my $.02

I bought the Panny last week. I love it, but it has the same minor problems as the Denon 1910 due to the fact it uses the same upconversion chip. I'd buy whichever of the 2 you find cheaper.
I haven't seen the Sony in person yet, but I've read that it has minor colour issues. In Canada the Sony is $100 more for some reason, so that influenced my decision.
Overall, I doubt you'll regret the purchase of any of the three.

what is this "problem" and how does it affect performance/PQ??

It's a sort-of blocky pixelation around motion in low lit scenes. I don't know if this is a proper term, but I've seen it described in other forums as "macroblocking". After some tweaking I don't notice it any longer. I guess if you were blowing the picture up larger it may be more of an issue. As it stands, the PQ is great on my 51" RPTV.

From what I've read, greens are somewhat muted on the Sony. I'm yet to see it first hand, but I'd imagine it's correctable. You may even be able to do some tweaking in your settings to lessen the problem. No biggy.
As you can see, the problems with these units are very minor. No reason to be unhappy with either, as the PQ is otherwise excellent for the price.

Poorly. ;-)
I haven't tested many, but the PQ suffers. It's not awful, but you definitely notice the drop off. I don't know if it just zooms in or performs some sort of "wide-zoom", as I don't own too much non-anamorphic stuff.
I know of several people who have written to Panasonic and they have been fairly receptive about concerns. A firmware upgrade has been mentioned to take care of this issue and the macroblocking. This is not quite a certainty yet, but it's not just a rumour either. Would be nice.

I believe the release date is coming up. The last Samsung (841?) was said to be mediocre, but that could have been due to the DVI-HDMI problems. It is said to be Faroudja based, so it will likely inherit macroblocking. It's loaded with features, for sure. Might be worth teh wait if you're into SACD.

Actually the panasonic uses a 2310 while the Denon uses a 2301.

Regardless, the same problem applies to both players as well as the Denon 2910 and 3910 (which use the 2310).

hmmm, i am down to the denon1910, the pAni, and the new samsungHD941.
i like the fact that with the denon i will be able to connect it to a reciever, since hdmi receivers are expencive
i like the samsng becus it is the newest, so chances are they have worked out the bugs the two others suffer from.
i still dont no tho...

You should have no problems connecting any of the above to a receiver.
The preliminary reviews of the Samsung are mixed. Looks like they still haven't cleared up the problems that the 841 and 931 suffered from.

The only thing my denon suffers from is the macroblocking. And I think it is all about the source disk. If I put in a crappy PQ DVD - it will have macroblocking when set to upconvert to 1080i. If I put in a good/great PQ DVD - no macroblocking. I personally don't see it as a REAL bug - just an after effect of bad PQ. My $.02
Edit - and off the top of my head, I don't think it macroblocks in prog. mode. I will check if someone wants.

I don't think anyone can give you a definitive answer on that, but I think it's worth repeating that I've seen it on both and that it doesn't bother me to the point of distraction.

If it's not there in 480p mode but shows up in 720/1080, I would take that as evidence that it's a bug in the Faroudja chip or it's implementation. Please do check, I've very curious.
