Hi all. I'm new here (and with hdtv) so bare with me. I just bought a Hatachi 65s700 HDTV and when I hooked up my dvd I was not happy with the picture. I have a JVC dvd and it has 480p and 480i. So I thought that I needed a dvd with up conversion to get 720 or 1080i. Thus getting a better picture with my dvd. I bought a LGDVB418 hooked it up with componet cables and no luck on better picture. The unit was set to 1080i and so was my TV. It difalted right back to 480. So i looked in the manual and in the notes for resolution it stated that if the dvd has copy protection it will only play in 480. I called the company and confermed that. What a rip. It seems all my dvd's are copy protected because they all defaulted to 480. Did I do something wrong in the hook up? Also is there any quality dvd's out there that could help me get say 720 or 1080i that doesn't have that copy protection thing?
Thanks hope to get some help.

You should have researched your upconverting DVD players. Most of them only supply the upconverted signal to DVI or HDMI. Most stay at 480P for component video output.
Doesn't the 65S700 have a DVI/HDCP compliant input?

It automaticaly defaults to 480p when you use component cabels. You have to use hdmi on that model for it to upconvert. If your tv is hdcp compliant the copy protection thing shouldnt be a problem when you go out from the hdmi on the player to the dvi or hdmi on your tv. This is just a simple way of explaining what 57u just said.

Thanks for getting back guys. I did do some research on this unit. According to the user manual this unit has 720 and 1080i from the componet jack's. It does have a HDMI out and my TV has a DVI. I could get a cable and dVI adapter and try that. I have been hearing good things about the denon 1910 I might just take this back and spend the extra $, get the cable ect..does the denon have HDMI or DVI. I'd like to stay with on cable an no adapters.
Thanks again

There is a sw/firmware?? reset that will activate the component outs. Any built before 12/03 are activated. Anything after the build date is not active.

I can only get it to up convert to the 720p, not the 1080i. I am using a HDMI to DVI cable on a Samsung HCn4226 projection HD tv.
When I had the compontant cables hooked up it would show a 1080i upconversion.
Should I be concerned that it will not go to a 1080i upconversion, or is 720p better?
Since this is a DLP TV with a native resolution of 720P, the 720P may be the "preferred connection".

latt you are right, the lg does support the 1080i up-convert through either component or hdmi. are you running straight to the tv? if not that could be the problem, otherwise i would definitely recommend checking out some other dvds.

Hi so does anyone know for sure that this paticular model LGDVB418 can be upgraded firmware? I want to know because my samsung HCM5525 set doesn't have HDMI or DVI, only component. So if this model does 1080 upconversion via component, I would like to go try it out. Please let me know. Thank you so much.

just purchased the lgdvb418, having some difficulty getting the unit to upconvert through component. I know KevinW has recommended the firmware upgrade but does that apply to this unit too? and if the unit isnt upconverting commercial dvds to 1080 is it really worth keeping then?

I just purchased a LGDVB418 and hooked it thru my Hitachi using HDMI cabling and so far, so good.
Movie-type DVDs (like those you purchase or rent) will require the HDMI cabling,
otherwise why buy this unit unless you like its photo card/memory stick capabilities?
