Dsiney is jumping on the Blu-Ray band wagon. This should only make the transition to HD DVD even more confusing. http://film.guardian.co.uk/news/story/0,12589,1369929,00.html

With 2 new promising formats and lots of supporters on both sides, this battle could rage on for quite awhile. I think someone will eventually come out with a dual-laser Blu-Ray/HD-DVD player and that will make a lot of people happy.
Here's another article on Disney backing Blu-Ray for it's movies:

Probably...
But IMO, that's not the proper solution. All that does is add to the complexity and increase price to the consumer.
There's too much format contention as it was/is...
beta/vhs/S-VHS/D-VHS
DVD-A/SACD
DD/DTS
Blu-ray/HD-DVD
DVD-R/DVD+R
WMV-9
CD
Etc...
How much crap can you put into one device that will make "Everyone" happy? (profit, price, praticality, life expectancy, yada, yada)
No one wants to play nice and everyone wants to be king of the monkey bars. Who pays? You and I.

Disney signed a non-exclusive agreement though. So they could still release HD-DVD's if they decide to (and they might since it looks like they'll be out about a year before blu-ray).

Ratman is right, though, there is a Pioneer player that for less than $149, does SACD, DVD-A and DVD progressive, DTS and DDigital. I am not certain if it does DVD plus AND minus R/RW, but close along with MP3 and the like. So sometimes if you wait, long enough - I know I will - pricing goes down along with the increase in features.
If there becomes a format war again with HD DVDs-then it won't take off because who wants to have to buy 2 HD DVD players - for each format - to play some Paramount or Warner Bros. movies - then switch to another player-no matter how cheap they become (unless these become dual like the Pioneer example) - to play a Disney or Columbia/TriStar DVD----NO ONE!!!

I totally agree, I'm not interested in dropping $1k+ on each HD DVD player.
They're going to have to sit down and get this worked out if they want HD DVD to be successful.
But who listens to consumers.

I think Bluray will win out in the end run. HDDVD may become the DIVX of the new millenium.
Even though HDDVD could be into production quicker and cheaper. BluRay has the larger storage abilty. The HDDVD can only fit a feature film. While Bluray can fit the film and all kinds of extras in HD as well.
Enough room for Theater release and Directors cuts as well as all the making ofs and sequels can fit on 1 disk,
