Here's a link to the Toshiba SD-V592 Near-HD Up-Convert DVD/VCR Combo with HDMI:

Nobody has yet to review this new DVD player and I am really interested to hear if anyone has tried it yet?

With it's Up-Conversion and HDMI output, I would think that in addition to your DVDs, that it will also Up-Convert your Video tapes through the VCR side of the player... any idea if this is true?

This deck looks similar in specs to the Toshiba SD-5970, except for the addition of the VCR player/recorder. One nice feature of the V592 is that it can do simultaneous DVD playback and VHS Record.

The list price is $229.99, but Best Buy stores carry it at $199.99.

Try the following, as with many new upconverting dvd players coming to market macroblocking seems to have become an issue.

I just bought a Toshiba SD-V592 to hook via HDMI to HDMI cable to my Panasonic 42" Plasma. It had great picture and sound but I kept having sound "drop-outs" frequently during DVD play. It even jump out of video mode back to the DVD start-up menu 4 times and I had to re-start. I returned it to BB and got a second unit. It did the same thing except more frequently (but never bumped out of video mode). I tried every tweak to both TV and DVD but nothing worked. Plasma and DVD were both set to HDMI mode (simple one button push on DVD). I hooked up my old DVD and it workied fine (but it was not through HDMI only component cable). Maybe there's a HDMI incompatibility issue. I return it to BB and will try another brand soon unless someone has an answer.

Thanks for the review. But that's disconcerting that the sound drops out. Since HDMI carries both video and sound, is that the only connection you are using?

If you haven't returned your second unit yet, I would be currious if you could continue to connect the HDMI cable to carry the video portion of the signal, but then connect the DVD player's Coaxial or Optical TosLink Digital Audio Output to your TV's (or receivers) digital audio input and see if the audio problem still persists?

I already returned the second unit but I'll try your suggestion if I have similar audio drop out problems on the next DVD I try. I might just wait for a another brand to try with HDMI interface and see what happens. Thanks for your suggestion Dude !
