I was about to purchase a Sony 51ws500 when I noticed the Hitachi sets. I can't figure out what the differences are between these two sets... The SWX20B is more expensive and has a nicer remote. Any help? Thanks Jim

If you get a comparison brochure, it will show you all the differences. The main reason for the "S" being more expensive is that it has the "wide-neck" (larger) guns and I believe a different "screen".

I bought the "U" series last year because I could not see a significant difference between the picture quality of the "U" and the "S".

Well 57U: didn't get the 57X. I bought the 51G series for $2,100 plus the Lipsch (sp) home theater. I hope this works out. Still confused about the X U S G but I hope it all works out.

Thanks for the info. If the price difference were smaller it would be an easier decision... Jim

:p

Well the 51G came in today and I finally figured out what the hell I got, I think-I was at work, my wife supervised the set up team. Wow, I'm stoked as of this evening but also a newbie that might regret my first impression. Hope not.

What I got besides the TV was a Klipsch surround sound system with a Denon receiver and a Denon DVD 900. They also hooked up my Hatachi VCR. What really got me was instead of a surge protector, I received a Monster power center? Looks like another receiver but is supposed to totally protect the system and is insured to $250K if a lightning blast fries my system. Is that right?

I have Cox digital but analog, of course on the regular channels-little grainy but still looks good. Digital tier is excellent. Flipped over to the digital movie Apocalypse Now (redux) and notice great picture but black lines above and below about 4" each. Went to zoom and it filled the screen. Does watching the movie with a black bar hurt it or was I correct to zoom, albeit, I lost some of the total picture.

I had saved quite a bit even though our mutual funds have taken a bath lately. Hope the $ 350 Surge-power center? was a good thing.

57U, you were right, I am still in a little awe and that ain't easy for an ex-Viet Vet and ex-cop! ANy thoughts on what I just got myself into?

1. Watch the picture as the director intended - with the black bars. Don't worry about damaging your set with the occasional 2:35:1 DVD or movie.

2. Now that you have your new set, look in the FAQ section for the most recent post "what to do with my new HDTV".

3. Isn't life grand? or perhaps 3-5 grand...

:D

Yeah you got that right=to the tune of about 5.5 grand. Still worth it except I hit the wrong button on one of the remotes and lost contol of the cable-Got control of the TV though-oh well- Got a guy coming in to tomorrow to help reset. Great forum 57U-Is the G okay-looks like it to me. You're in Canada-knew some of your soldiers in Nam-good troops!

57U and Kevin: You guys seem to know the most about the equipment-Here's what I ended up with: Hatachi 51GWX20B-Denon AVR-1403/483 Surround Receiver-Denon DVD 900K-klipsch Loud speaker system-Monster Power Center HTS 3500, which is supposed to relace a surge strip and protects my system up tp $100K.

So far, beautiful picture even on my cable analog(Cox -Tulsa) Terrific on the DVD player. ANy comments on what I got-Another Newbie:( Under $ 5K)

Well it has been a week and I think that the set-up I received is excellent. Watched the pro football games (analog cable on regular teir). Picture on the long shots were somewhat grainy but on close-ups were very good.;) Digital teir was very very good. Saw my first dvd. Independence Day (8th time) Kinda blew me away. Switched to the VCR with the same movie and that was good too. Feel like I got a good deal. When I screwed up the remote mentioned earlier, the salesman who sold me the set came out to assist (Ultimate Electronics). Overall, seems to have been a good experience. Definitely like the set and set the settings similar to what you mentioned,57U, on another thread.

Hope I don't come back with a grimace face.

Well, it's been a month now and I can truthfully say, this was an excellent purchase. Still can't figure out the difference between the 51Gxwb20 moniker and the U or the X? The salesman, who came out to my house after I screwed up the remote:rolleyes: called and said if I wanted the U series 65", I could replace it for the same price I paid for the 51. Think I would get overpowered since my couch is about 10 feet away. The Denon surround system seems very good. This was bought at Ultimate electronis in Tulsa. Seem to be very customer oriented. Pleasant surprise. So what's the G mean?

I think that the "G" has a better anti-"G"lare screen, but I wouldn't bet money on it.

Truth to tell, the TV sits off center from all my windows in the living room and I have had no glare problems at all. Do you think the Denon receiver , et. al was a good purchase. Thanks for your help, obviously you are way ahead of me in this realm-thanks

The SWX hitachi series has a anti glare screen compared to the UWX, which has only a high contrast screen. Also the swx features the all new av networking feature, which allows you to control up to 4 sources with out switching video imputes and by using one single remote. Swx series sets come with two remotes- one basic remote(very small) and the main hitachi universal remote. Hope this helps-- Julian

You're right 57U, I'm old enough to know what I like and so far-I like. On one of your earlier threads, I think you mentioned how great these big screens are and man, after a hard day at work, great escape. My 36" Toshiba is good but relegated to the bedroom.

Julian, thanks for your reply, but this is a G not an S or U but I think 57U explained that earlier.

Saw in the news that cable companies had reached an agreement relative to having to require an HDTV receiver versus having them built in. Since mine is HDTV (Capable?), I hope that doesn't mean that when Cox cable starts HDTV, that I have to get another set with a built in receiver, box not available.

Great forum you guys!:D
