View Full Version : Looking for an "upscaling" dvd player

I am looking for an affordable upscaling dvd player. Currently I have it down to the final four: Toshiba 5970, Denon 1910, Samsung 841, Samsung 941. I would have it hooked up to my Samsung TXP3064W (I know marginal upgrade on CRT). Right now I am leaning toward the Tosh or the 841 due to price. The Denon is 50-75 more and I would need to buy a dvi cable and obv the 941 100 more but comes with the cables.

For anyone out there who has one of there what are your impressions.

Search for the sammies here. Even the new one still seems to share problems with the old one.

I have bought and tested the Toshiba SD-5970 and Samsung DVD-HD841
Upconverting DVD players in the past two days, and I was quite unimpressed. To my eye there was no visible improvement over my current Sony progressive scan unit. I connected the units using a Monster Cable HDMI cable (Toshiba), and Monster DVI/HDMI cable (Samsung), as opposed to AR component video cables for the current unit. I then ran each upconverting unit side by side with my old DVD player, and switched back and forth to compare. If anything, I found both upconverting units to have a tendancy to be very muted in darker scenes. I also ran the DVE setup program to calibrate the inputs, and even after competing the calibration, I was still not impressed. I am going to be taking both units back this morning. As easy is it is to get caught up in standards, accronyms and formats, for my money, the old fashoned progressive scan unit is delivering a better picture. :mecry:

I have read with Sony sets and DVI in - it darkens the image. When I connected my DCT with DVI - the picture was dark. So when I hooked up my Denon with DVI - I just knew it would be dark. And guess what - it was not :). I was very surprised. The denon also has a black adjustment and brightness in it. But I have not had to use the brightness and can't remember if I have the denon set to output true black or not, but I think it is. I can also tell a difference in 1080i - and so can my brother who is not technically inclined at all :) And when he said it looked better - I knew it wasn't just me hoping it looked better.

I ended up returning my Sammy HD941 b/c I found a great deal on a "scratch and dent" Denon 1910 at Crutchfield.com. It was $212. That plus the DVI cable cost less than what I paid for the Sammy. Everything positive I've read about the Denon is true. No black crush, noticeable difference in 720p and 1080i. This is on my Sony 42" rear projection LCD (forget the exact model #, KF something). I'd recommend this unit 100%. Hell, even Dodgeball looked amazing on it last night.
