I think i might ask my parents for one for christmas and was wondering, if i get either one will there be any issues since dvd's use Macroprotection, when recording?
Will picture quality be not as good as the original disc? How about sound?
My father rents a lot of movies from blockbuster and thought it would be cool if i can record them.Oh by the way i'm still trying to get the oldman to upgrade his Dolby pro logic receiver to the new DD5.1 and DTS format receivers , not to mention DPL2.
I still laugh at him to this day, saying you would be surprised what a difference it makes going to digital sound :rofl2: The man is stubborn as an oxe.
Anyways what are your guys thoughts on the dvd recorders and burners for the pc's.
I've had good luck with Lite-on drives. There are still issues with drives and media. Kind of like it was with CD-R in the beginning.
Also, compatibility with HT DVD players. Some only do +R (plus R) and some do -R (dash R), some do both.
Finding software is the issue since DVD Xcopy was shutdown. Not supposed to copy commercial DVDs you know. Maybe backup your personal ones.

LeeS have you tried DVD shrink. Its freeware you can download and it blows DVDXcopy away. I don't burn movies for myself , but I will admitt that I burn them for friends so I don't have to lend them. I collect and do not want to risk damage. Matt27 I'd go with a Plextor burner. In my opinion they are the best. You won't find a better burner. That's what I have and I've never had a dud using DVD shrink.

Plextor Burners are top-dawg (and have been for years). We've got both CD and DVD burners by Plextor in the PC I built for my wife last fall, and they are stellar.
As an aside- ironically, MaximumPC just gave the nod to Sony for a new DVD-burner that just kicks. They usually give Plextor top ranking- but at this time, it looks like Sony is king-o-the-hill with a new model.

LeeS have you tried DVD shrink. Its freeware you can download and it blows DVDXcopy away. I think your talking about the dvdxcopy express and yes it sucks cause it atoumatically compresses. Most people download the free vesion try it, see compression and say it sucks. But dvdxcopy platinum is a different story, totally tweakable. My copies look great no loss in P.Q. at all. Also remember that you can now get dual layer burners now!!! Yes, But do you need software to run it, example is dvdx copy platinum software gonna know what to do when i try squeezing 9.0 gigs on it without compression, will it know to automaticaly start the dual layer process? Just curious if anyone knows, this is why ive been reluctant to buy one.And i have to agree with lee, i've used lite-on since about 2001 cdr and dvd burners, there cheap and they work, had 4 so far, havent had one fail yet.

I use dvd shrink also. I use a new lite-on that does +/-R, +/-RW, and dual layer disks. I haven't burned a dual layer disk yet - but as soon as I get some new media I'll grab a few to play with. I also burn with Nero and I would say it will handle the dual layer media as dvd shrink just encodes.
