My Dad decided to buy himself a Samsung 42" plasma tv for christmas, unfortunately I don't know the exact model...
So my sister and I decided to get him a dvd player;
We were looking at the Samsung DVD-HD841, but after I saw several on-line reviews about problems setting up the dvi connection and basically bad experiences, we're leaning toward the Toshiba SD-5970 with HDMI instead for about $20 cheaper (figure we'll get a HDMI to DVI converter for $30.)
Anyone have any experience with this combo? Or any other general advice?

One piece of general advice is to find out what he intends to hook into the DVI/HDMI input first. Is he getting HD cable or HD satellite, because the (normally only one) DVI/HDMI slot can get filled up fast. If you buy him a great DVD player with fantastic upconversion, you may be asking him to buy a DVI switcher so he can get two or more DVI/HDMI inputs to his single DVI output wihtout constantly changing cables. Those things can run an extra $150 and up.

If you are considering Samsung, you should consider the new Samsung DVD-HD941 as it features the Faroudja video processing chip which deinterlaces the video signal while upconverting it for a better picture. It also comes with HDMI digital-video output and includes an HDMI interconnect (HDMI-HDMI) cable and an HDMI-to-DVI converter cable... this might save you some money.
