Have any of you experienced a blotchy (somewhat pixilated) picture watching DirecTV non-HD channels even locals in any mode, full, fill etc.. It seems to show the most on faces and skin colors. Many times people’s faces look like they have blemishes. Other times I notice the paint on a wall appears pixilated, mostly on reds.
Although I don't have DirecTV, this pixellation occurs on any highly compressed channels, like satellite needs to do and also on some cable channels that they don't give enough bandwidth. Not the fault of the TV certainly. Hope most of your channels don't have this problem. It is more noticable, the larger your TV screen, because, like using a magnifying glass, the imperfections show up more on the larger sets.

57U,
Unfortunately, it is most channels and pretty annoying. I didn’t think it was the set because HDnet, HD HBO comes in so incredibly sharp, clean and crisp. There are some channels that do not appear to be as bad although I will notice a change in PQ watching a 30 min show.
One other thing I noticed with this tv... watching anything with the picture mostly black such as movie credits or very dark scenes, the very center of the picture will have these very faint white horizontal lines from top to bottom of the picture. Is this normal? The white lines are about 6" long at the most. I always see these on any dark scene.
As you have probably read on this forum, all sets need to be set up when you get them home. Turn off all of the automatic settings (auto-colour, black level, SVM, etc). Then use a setup disk to assist you in setting up the proper colour, contrast, brightness, etc. Once you have done all that, then you'll know for sure that the "problems" you see are not from an incorrect colour adjustment or too much contrast, etc.
Those lines you saw are not normal. If they do not go away with the setup, you'll need to call for service.
Good luck.

Many posts I've read state that a lot of folks, using DirecTV, use S-Video for all Standard Definition programs and use the Components for HD stuff. The S-Video is more forgiving with digital artifacts. Oops.... never mind! I just remembered that the tuner is built in, so that is not applicable in your case. Oh well...
I also agree that you get your black level, contrast, sharpness properly adjusted. On the F38310, I recommend that you keep your Black Level around 50%, Contrast at approx. 35-40% (or lower) and sharpness at 'one or two notches' up from dead left.
As for SVM, the only way to disable it is by disconnecting a wire on the inside of the set. I've tried it and prefer it enabled. The difference is negligible (IMO).
